It began in 1870, when a group of visionary women founded the Brisbane Female and Infants Refuge to provide a safe haven for vulnerable women and children. This humble initiative laid the groundwork for what would become one of Queensland's most trusted and comprehensive care providers. Throughout its history, the organisation has evolved to meet the changing needs of society, standing by the community through significant challenges such as the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1919, the hardships of the Great Depression and World War II, and the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s. In each era, Anglicare adapted its services, pioneering community nursing and expanding into aged care, mental health support, and homelessness services. Today, Anglicare Southern Queensland has grown into a major not-for-profit enterprise, employing over 3,000 staff and supported by hundreds of volunteers. It continues to uphold its founding legacy by providing a wide range of essential services—from residential aged care and foster care to family counselling and youth support—empowering thousands of Queenslanders to live with dignity and hope.
