About

The City of Edinburgh Council is the local authority for Scotland's capital city, serving approximately 550,000 residents. The council took on its current form in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, replacing the City of Edinburgh District Council. As one of Scotland's largest local authorities, the council employs over 10,000 staff and provides over 700 services to residents, businesses, and visitors. The council is led by Chief Executive Paul Lawrence and operates through several directorates covering Children, Education and Communities, Place, Customer and Corporate Services, and the Edinburgh Integration Joint Board. Services span from education and schools to housing, social care, waste management, planning, roads and transport, cultural venues, and libraries. The council also plays a key role in economic development and supports the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal. With headquarters at City Chambers on the High Street and administrative offices at East Market Street, the council is committed to working together for the people of Edinburgh through its core behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility.
