The story of Katalyst Space Technologies is a journey born from a shared dream to redefine humanity's future in space. It began with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University graduates Ghonhee Lee and Nicholas Liapis, who, after years of designing rockets together, envisioned a new era for satellite technology. Their passion for the limitless possibilities of space led them to team up with their college friend, Kaleb Beebout, to tackle the monumental challenge of innovating satellite operations. Initially, the founders dispersed across the country, contributing their talents to aerospace giants like Boeing and Raytheon. However, they were drawn back to their roots in Arizona, compelled by a vision to create something new in a place they called home. What started as an idea in Prescott, Arizona, blossomed into a formal company in 2020. Initially operating as a fully remote team, the need for closer collaboration soon became apparent, leading them to establish a physical headquarters in Flagstaff in 2021. This move was not just about a physical space; it was about planting roots in a community with a rich history in space exploration and a vibrant STEM environment. Katalyst's core mission is to disrupt the traditional, static nature of the satellite industry. For decades, satellites have been launched with fixed capabilities, becoming relics in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Katalyst is pioneering an 'upgrade economy' for space, developing technologies that allow for in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing. This means satellites can be reconfigured, refueled, and repaired on-orbit, extending their lifespan and enhancing their capabilities post-launch. Their innovative approach has not gone unnoticed, securing crucial contracts with the U.S. government, including the Department of Defense and the Air Force Research Laboratory. The company is developing key products like 'SIGHT,' an object detection and tracking device, and 'ICON,' a decentralized sensor network, to enhance space domain awareness. A significant milestone in their journey was the acquisition of Atomos Space in 2025, a strategic move that brought a flight-proven spacecraft bus and advanced robotics technology under one roof. This acquisition has positioned Katalyst to offer full-stack mission solutions, from life extension and upgrades to crucial space domain awareness, accelerating their path to making space operations more dynamic, sustainable, and accessible.
