SIL International is a global, faith-based nonprofit organization that seeks to empower local language communities to overcome the challenges that language barriers present. Since its founding in 1934, SIL has grown from a summer institute in Arkansas into a large organization engaged in language development across the world. With a vision to see people flourish in community using the languages they value most, SIL partners with local communities in 98 countries to provide language solutions that accelerate development, education, and engagement with Scripture. Our core areas of expertise include Scripture translation, literacy initiatives, linguistic research, and education programs tailored to address the unique needs of each community. Today, SIL operates over 1,420 active language projects that impact more than 855 million people globally. Our mission is driven by a commitment to see all individuals enjoy equal access to education and socio-economic opportunities irrespective of the languages they speak or sign. Through collaboration with local partners, thousands of community volunteers, and dedicated staff from around the world, SIL continues to advocate for the importance of language in enhancing quality of life and cultural preservation.
