The Wistar Institute is the nation's first independent nonprofit institution devoted exclusively to foundational biomedical research and training. Founded in 1892 as an anatomical teaching museum, Wistar has evolved into a global leader in biomedical research with special expertise in cancer, immunology, infectious disease, and vaccine development. Wistar discoveries have led to the development of vaccines for rabies, rubella, and rotavirus, the identification of genes associated with various site-specific cancers, the development of monoclonal antibodies, and other significant research technologies and tools.
