2027 Internship Opportunity: Instrumentation Support Intern
Overview:
The internship will support various commercial and AAR test programs at MxV Rail’s laboratory and test tracks. Projects will focus on data collection and electronic systems used during testing.
Projects:
- Instrumentation-related projects and measurements at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST).
- General project management and communication for IR&D projects.
- General instrumentation maintenance, troubleshooting, training, and shop work for any general instrumentation needs. Utilized shop skills, sensor, cable, and signal maintenance, organization, teamwork, & cooperation.
Preferred Level of Education:
- Minimum of a completed high school degree. Optional completion of a 2-year college program or pursuing a 4-year degree. Preferred studies include General Engineering, Electronics, Mechatronics, Math, Physics, and Civil studies.
Primary Responsibilities:
Learn, support, grow & have fun supporting projects with the On-Track Instrumentation Team. The primary duties of an intern will be to support the following:
- Assist with laboratory and field-testing activities, including test setup, data collection, equipment and sensor preparation, troubleshooting, and data analysis.
- Collect, organize, and submit test data to support engineering projects and performance evaluations.
- Support field surveying, static measurements, cable building, and other instrumentation-related activities.
- Prepare, maintain, and troubleshoot data acquisition systems, sensors, and testing equipment.
- Participate in instrumentation projects, technical training, and team meetings as an active member of the Instrumentation Team.
- Collaborate with engineers and technicians within the Vehicle/Track Interaction (VTI) group to support testing and research initiatives.
- Contribute to a variety of instrumentation focus areas while gaining hands-on experience with engineering testing and measurement systems.
- Ensure that all duties and responsibilities are performed in a safe manner.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities:

- Experience supporting testing or data collection activities in a technical environment, including the use of sensors, transducers, and related equipment.
- Basic experience with programming and data processing tools.
- Familiarity with testing methodologies, data collection processes, and data analysis techniques.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including strong computer skills.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including data organization and analysis, formulas/functions, charting and data visualization, and basic programming capabilities.
- Ability and willingness to learn about the railroad industry and the engineering principles that improve the safety, performance, and efficiency of railroad systems and components.
