2027 Internship Opportunity: Software Services Support Intern

Overview:

The internship will support Software Services and assist with the development of software packages MxV Rail produces.

Projects:

NUCARS

  • Assist with bug fixes and get familiar with FORTRAN

Preferred Level of Education:

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in applied or computational mathematics or physics, completion of junior year (by Summer 2027) minimum. Additional preference is given to those with an engineering or computer science minor.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with software code implementation, testing, and debugging activities.
  • Complete work item documentation and write-ups to support project development.
  • Develop and execute test plans, test cases, and validation regimes.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining technical product documentation.
  • Participate in daily stand-up meetings and provide updates on completed and ongoing work.
  • Collaborate with project team members to support software development objectives.
  • Communicate directly with MxV Rail technical staff to advance project deliverables.
  • Complete assigned tasks with a high level of quality and within established deadlines.
  • Learn and effectively utilize software tools and development packages used by MxV Rail.
  • Support teamwork, collaboration, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist other software developers as needed.
  • Replicate and test user interactions with software applications to identify issues and improve functionality.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and communicate progress effectively across overlapping timelines.
  • Follow established development standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Ensure that all duties and responsibilities are performed in a safe manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience with the following:
  • Preparing user documentation, instructions, or technical materials based on completed work.
  • Presenting information and collaborating effectively within team environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
  • Completion of junior year coursework by Summer 2027.
  • MxV Rail policy requires all prospective employees to complete and pass a criminal background check (Disclosure for Consumer Reports Consent Form) and a pre-employment substance abuse screening (Applicant Consent for Drug Testing Form) as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the following:
    • Laboratory testing methods and procedures
    • Collecting, organizing, and analyzing technical or scientific data
    • Preparing technical reports and presenting data-driven findings
    • Mathematical modeling and numerical algorithm development
    • Mathematical programming using Fortran, MATLAB, or similar computational tools
    • Managing project deliverables while meeting budget and schedule requirements.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques and their practical application.
  • Ability to interpret complex data sets and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a project-driven environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
