3D Photogrammetry Scanning & Modeling Intern

Open 41d

About The Team

The Special Projects team at TUMO leads large-scale cultural and institutional initiatives that extend beyond the standard educational curriculum.

One of its core projects is the Armenian Cultural Heritage Institute, which leads a nation-wide initiative dedicated to documenting and digitally preserving Armenia's historic sites using high-resolution laser scanning and photogrammetry. Visit the ACHI website to learn more: .

Internship Purpose

The internship is a great opportunity for TUMO (M.O. preferred) alumni to apply and further develop their technical skills through real-world cultural heritage documentation projects. The 3D Photogrammetry Scanning & Modeling intern will contribute across field scanning operations, data processing, and high-quality 3D model production. The internship combines on-site data capture (laser, terrestrial and aerial) with post-processing of photogrammetry and laser scan data into accurate, optimized, and well-documented 3D models.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the internship, the intern is expected to:

  • Use laser scanning, photogrammetry, and drones to document real-world sites.

  • Capture and process laser scan and photogrammetry data into accurate 3D models.

  • Register point clouds, optimize meshes, perform UV mapping, and apply textures.

  • Review and improve 3D models by identifying and resolving common reconstruction issues.

  • Organize and manage digital documentation datasets using industry best practices.

  • Contribute to the digital documentation and preservation of Armenian cultural heritage through real-world projects.

    What You'll Do

Field Scanning & Data Capture

  • Participate in multiple-day 3D scanning missions on-site across different Armenian regions, including image capture and laser scanning operations.

  • Learn to operate the FARO Focus M70 laser scanner and related equipment.

  • Pilot drones to capture aerial imagery and execute pre-planned flight paths for photogrammetry missions.

  • Perform pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight safety checks for UAV operations.

  • Support the team in following field safety procedures (rain, dust, wind, and public interaction).

3D Model Production & Processing

  • Generate high-resolution 3D models from photogrammetry and laser scan data.

  • Learn image alignment, point cloud registration, and digital reconstruction workflows.

  • Apply textures, including color correction and consistency adjustments using Adobe Lightroom.

  • Perform UV mapping, mesh optimization, and preparation of clean, high-quality outputs.

  • Assist with batch processing of image datasets into 3D reconstructions.

Quality Assurance & Optimization

  • Conduct checks on scan data and 3D models to ensure completeness, accuracy, and consistency.

  • Assist in identifying reconstruction issues and applying quality improvements.

  • Support mesh optimization while maintaining geometric and visual quality.

  • Follow internal quality standards throughout the documentation process.

Data Management & Archiving

  • Organize raw and processed datasets using structured folder systems per site.

  • Maintain clear, consistent Lightroom catalogs and image collections for each project.

  • Ensure secure archiving of all data (images, scans, models, and documentation).

  • Help ensure project data is well-organized and accessible.

Profile

  • Strong interest in Armenian monuments, cultural heritage, and field documentation.

  • Enthusiasm for photogrammetry, 3D modeling, and digital preservation.

  • TUMO M.O. alumni or current students (Preferred)

  • Physical readiness for multi-day field trips in varied outdoor conditions.

  • Responsible and careful when handling technical equipment.

  • Punctual, reliable, and eager to learn new tools and workflows.

  • Basic familiarity with 3D software or digital content creation workflows.

  • Good communication and team collaboration skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with RealityCapture.

  • Experience with Adobe Lightroom.

  • Basic drone piloting experience.

  • Valid driver's license.

A 3D modeling portfolio is required and should include examples of 3D models created in any software.
