Accounting Assistant | Accounts Receivable & Collections

Bordner Home Improvement | Starting at $22/hour, based on experience

Bordner Home Improvement is looking for an Accounting Assistant who is organized, detail-oriented, and not afraid to go after outstanding payments.

Let's be honest: we're not looking for someone who sends an invoice, makes one phone call, and hopes for the best. We need someone who takes ownership of accounts receivable, follows up consistently, and isn't intimidated by uncomfortable conversations about money.

You'll play an important role in keeping our financial operations running smoothly, with a primary focus on accounts receivable, collections, and outstanding balances, reconciliations, and general accounting support.

The ideal candidate is persistent, confident, solutions-oriented, and motivated to get results. You know how to be professional without being passive, and you understand that collecting payment sometimes means making the extra call, asking the tough question, and holding people accountable to their commitments.

If you like solving problems, taking ownership, and seeing the results of your efforts, this could be the role for you!

What We Offer

  • Starting pay of $22/hour, based on experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with a 4% company match
  • PTO and sick time
  • Company holidays and employee events
  • Training and opportunities to grow
  • A team-oriented work environment
  • The opportunity to be part of a winning team that takes pride in doing things the right way

What You'll Do

Accounts Receivable & Collections:

  • Own daily accounts receivable activities, including invoicing, payment tracking, account reconciliation, and outstanding balances.
  • Proactively pursue past-due accounts through phone calls, emails, and consistent follow-up. Don't wait for customers to pay on their own.
  • Contact customers regarding overdue invoices, address payment delays, and confidently ask for payment commitments.
  • Follow up on broken payment promises and outstanding balances until they are resolved or appropriately escalated.
  • Monitor AR aging reports, prioritize collection efforts, and identify accounts that need immediate attention.
  • Investigate billing disputes, payment discrepancies, and account issues, working with internal teams to find solutions and remove barriers to payment.
  • Maintain detailed records of collection efforts, customer communications, and payment arrangements.

Accounting & Financial Support:

  • Reconcile accounts and assist with month-end accounting tasks.
  • Enter and maintain accurate financial information in company and accounting systems.
  • Prepare reports and spreadsheets for management.
  • Work closely with Coordinators, Project Managers, Payroll, and Accounting teams.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and handle confidential employee and company information with discretion.
  • Help identify problems, improve processes, and find solutions before small issues become bigger ones.
  • Assist with additional accounting and administrative tasks as needed.

What We're Looking For

You don't have to know everything on day one, but you do need the right mindset. We can teach systems and processes. Persistence, accountability, and the confidence to have difficult conversations are harder to teach.

You'll be a great fit if you are:

  • Confident and assertive: You're comfortable making collection calls, discussing overdue balances, and asking customers to honor their payment commitments.
  • Persistent: You don't give up after one unanswered call or let overdue invoices fall through the cracks.
  • Results-driven: You take ownership of outstanding balances and are motivated to get them resolved.
  • Professional under pressure: You can handle pushback, difficult conversations, and frustrated customers without losing your composure.
  • A problem solver: You investigate discrepancies, work through roadblocks, and find practical solutions.
  • Detail-oriented and accurate: You understand that financial records need to be right.
  • Organized and dependable: You can manage multiple accounts, deadlines, and competing priorities.
  • Proactive: You recognize what needs attention and take action without waiting to be told.
  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating with a team.
  • Proficient in Excel and comfortable learning new software and systems.
  • Able to handle confidential financial information responsibly.

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of experience in accounting, accounts receivable, collections, payroll, bookkeeping, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • An associate's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of accounting or collections experience.
  • Experience managing past-due accounts and making outbound collection calls.
  • Experience with AR aging reports, payment arrangements, and account reconciliations.
  • Experience with payroll, commissions, or job costing.
  • Experience with accounting software or ERP systems.
  • Construction or home improvement industry experience.
