Accounting Manager (Headquarters)

The Police Athletic League (or PAL) is New York City’s largest independent youth development organization. We operate diverse programs from Head Start, Day Car and Universal Pre-K programs; to elementary and middle school after-school programs, summer day camps and summer Playstreets. Position Summary

The Accounting Manager coordinates, directs, and works closely with a team of accounting professionals to oversee the organization's daily financial operations, including general ledger accounting, cash management, contributed and earned revenue, accounts payable, payroll accounting, and grant compliance.

This is a highly technical, hands-on role responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial records while supporting audit readiness and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Leveraging Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT, the Accounting Manager will oversee complex balance sheet reconciliations, fixed assets, lease accounting, investment activity, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced nonprofit environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain knowledge of current accounting principles, GAAP, and applicable government regulations to ensure organizational compliance.

  • Supervise, mentor, and support accounting staff to achieve departmental goals and established deadlines.

  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve financial processes, increase efficiency, and strengthen internal controls.

  • Organize, coordinate, and monitor financial activities related to grants in collaboration with program staff and funding agencies.

  • Work collaboratively with accounting staff, internal departments, and external funding agencies to support grant implementation and financial reporting.

  • Record payroll-related accounting activity and collaborate with the Human Resources and Payroll teams to ensure accurate and timely reporting.

  • Review and approve accounts payable transactions prior to posting to the general ledger.

  • Review cash receipts and revenue transactions to ensure accuracy and completeness before posting.

  • Manage and reconcile all corporate credit card activity.

  • Maintain government accounts receivable records related to grant reimbursements and contract billing.

  • Maintain the organization's fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.

  • Prepare detailed balance sheet reconciliations, analyze account activity, and record adjusting journal entries as necessary.

  • Manage accounting for lease obligations and investment portfolios.

  • Prepare for and actively participate in annual financial statement audits, Single Audits, and governmental audits.

  • Monitor financial compliance for grants, contracts, corporate contributions, and foundation funding.

  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports for management.

  • Complete special projects and financial analyses as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer and Controller.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
