Advanced Materials Business Development Manager
Job Description:
Advanced Materials Business Development Manager
Collaborate with Innovative 3Mers Around the World
Choosing where to start and grow your career has a major impact on your professional and personal life, so it’s equally important you know that the company that you choose to work at, and its leaders, will support and guide you. With a wide variety of people, global locations, technologies and products, 3M is a place where you can collaborate with other curious, creative 3Mers.
This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military experience to a 3M career.
The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As an Advanced Materials Business Development (BD) Manager, you will lead 3M’s cross-service materials growth campaign – working cohesively with the business units to shape demand for 3M before requirements are written and convert that early influence into funded programs of record. Here you will make an impact by:
- Owning cross-service technical campaigns end-to-end: for each campaign, driving strategy from early shaping through funded program and sustained position across multiple services and platforms.
- Winning requirements and programs of record: positioning 3M’s capabilities into established programs through specification, qualification, qualified products lists, and incumbency expansion
- Early shaping & requirements seeding: building demand before a requirement is fully defined or funded by shaping through areas like the user and requirements community, the material commands, program offices, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)/Primes or the science and technology and innovation ecosystems (e.g. Service laboratories, FFRDCs, DARPA & DIU). Converting that early shaping into future funded demand.
- Running parallel and government and industry tracks: advancing a government qualification and specification track alongside an OEM and prime design-in track for the same capability so 3M is positioned at both the program and the platform integrator level.
- Building and managing a disciplined campaign pipeline: qualifying, forecasting and maintaining Salesforce Customer Relationship Management (CRM) rigor with regular reviews so the organization has an actionable view of current campaign maturity and funding.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships across the customer and industry landscape: program offices, Primes/OEMs, science and technology, and innovation communities while also coordinating internally with 3M’s Customer Account Managers (CAMs) and other BDM leads.
- Delivering compelling executive-level briefings, proposals and strategic engagement plans to senior 3M and customer stakeholders.
- Partnering with 3Ms technical and science and technology counterparts to translate materials capabilities into program and platform value propositions, including leading and supporting technical exchanges.
- Providing strategic direction and leadership to 3M’s cross-functional teams- spanning divisions, product management, science and technology, channel, contracts, legal, and finance – in a highly matrixed, multi-disciplined environment.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
- Five (5) or more years of experience in business development, capture, or campaign and program management within the federal or defense market
- Ability to obtain and hold a DoD Security Clearance (Active Secret clearance preferred)
- Named, current relationships across defense program offices, prime contractors and OEMs, or the science and technology community, exercised within approximately the last three years
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Prior military service in the US Army is highly desired but not required
- Demonstrated ability to manage multi-stakeholder campaigns or captures from start to finish
- Demonstrated ability to shape requirements and achieve design-wins- not only to capture already-funded competitions
- Demonstrated ability to orchestrate across functions (product management, channel, contracts, legal, finance, etc.) in a highly matrixed, multi-disciplined environment
- Familiarity with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR)
- Proven leader with a track record of success in business development, sales and achieving business results
- Experience with defense materials qualification, specification, or qualified products list processes
- Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Salesforce.com
- Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience with federal and defense market intelligence platforms such as GovWin IQ, Bloomberg Government (BGOV), and DACIS
