Advanced Medical Support Assistant
The Salt Lake City VA Health Care System is recruiting for Advanced Medical Support Assistants (AMSA) position in Health Administration Service and Community Care Service at Salt Lake City, Utah. The AMSA is primarily responsible for customer service, scheduling, and administrative support for the assigned clinics/providers and other duties as assigned they relate to care coordination for treatment of patients in the medical center or outpatient clinic.
The AMSA performs administrative support functions including scheduling appointments, inbound/outbound phone support, consult review and necessary documentation related to care coordination for treatment of patients in the medical center or outpatient clinics. The Advanced MSA demonstrates strong communication and customer services skills and works closely with all staff members performing the administrative duties essential to support the timely care of patients and support of the service/unit goals. Duties include but are not limited to: The Primary purpose for this position is to assist the staff in direct patient care areas that facilitate the efficient administrative operations of the unit. Acts as unit receptionists and accurately interprets and transcribes physician's orders and/or nurse practitioner's orders. Communicates with professional staff and services to the patient. Accurately inputs information into the computer daily, based on the written Admit, Discharge, and Transfer orders. Deals effectively with professional staff, other employees, patients, relatives, and visitors daily. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) is located in the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU). The AMSA provides expert administrative patient support while working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary care delivery model (a team comprised of doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social work) which provides optimal care to acutely ill mental Health Patients. The AMSA functions acts as unit receptionist and coordinates all administrative duties related to patient admissions, discharges, and transfers. Distribute and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization, assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assure each employee has enough work to keep busy. Keep in touch with the status and progress of work. Maintains electronic patient records, and maintains census and chart records, orders office supplies, coordinates internal communications, and troubleshoots equipment. Performs clerical/assistant work in support of the care and treatment given to patients. Advises on and administers medical record systems or maintains medical records in a ward, clinic, or other such unit of a medical facility using manual and/or automated systems. The Primary purpose for this position is to serve as work leader. Provides additional on the job training and requirements. Provides ongoing knowledge, skills that are needed to perform daily assigned duties. Demonstrates proper work methods. Must maintain a current knowledge to educate all inpatient MSA's in the medical and Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program/ Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. Maintains daily communication with supervisors to maintain workplace efficacy and work effectively with professional staff, other employees, patients, relatives, and visitors daily. The AMSA provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues, and maintains efficient workflow. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments; providing guidance to staff members to include changes in policies and procedures; creating and maintaining employee work schedules; orienting and providing on-the-job training for new and current employees; ensuring all training requirements are met; organizing the work structure of his/her assigned areas; and acting as liaison between MSA and staff in order to resolve day to day conflicts. The GS-6 MSA also completes timekeeping. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) is highly skilled in performing a wide range of tasks and their advanced capabilities support and facilitate the overall operation of a complex inpatient unit.
