About the role

The AI and Automation Engineer is responsible for the design, development and implementation of AI and automation solutions that support enhanced operational efficiency and delivery of clinical services. The role delivers both back office and frontline clinical automation initiatives and supports the implementation of group-wide AI strategy at operational level. Working within a growing IT team during a Group wide digital transformation, this role provides expertise and insights relating to existing and emerging AI and automation technologies. You'll be working alongside a newly formed Data Analytics team in the health industry, at the operational level of a digital transformation where data is central to the Group's future.

Reporting to the Data and Analytics Manager, the AI and Automation Engineer's key accountabilities include:
  • Designing and building automations that are fit for purpose and enhance quality and efficiency for both back office and front-line clinical settings
  • Identifying business processes suitable for automation or enhancement through AI applications
  • Ensuring robust and thorough testing of technology and workflows at regular intervals to maximise efficiency and performance
  • Deploying automated processes and solutions in consultation with key stakeholders
  • Enhancing and implementing group-wide AI strategy at operational level
  • Ensuring AI and automation solutions comply with organisational policies, governance requirements and relevant legislation
  • Providing subject matter expertise that supports systems and solutions tailored to the requirements of the health-care sector in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Maintaining awareness of industry-wide developments and changes that may impact the organisation and its systems
The successful candidate will:
  • Have 5+ years ML/RPA experience across Azure or AWS platforms
  • Have 2+ years’ experience with Agentic and RAG AI
  • Have advanced skills in data analysis and data processing
  • Hold a recognised industry certification and/or tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (Computer Science, Engineering, Technology, Data)
Experience setting up a new AI framework, or direct experience in healthcare or another similarly regulated, service-based environment, are both a strong plus. Neither is a dealbreaker on its own.
