AI Application Developer

Job Purpose

We are looking for a hands-on AI Application Developer to support the Digital Transformation Office in developing business applications, automation solutions and AI-enabled systems.

The ideal candidate should have a strong foundation in software development and be comfortable using modern AI coding tools and Large Language Models (LLMs) to accelerate application development.

This is a practical development role. The candidate will work closely with the Digital Transformation Office and business users to understand operational problems, develop prototypes rapidly, and turn successful ideas into working production applications.

We are not looking purely for an AI/ML researcher. We are looking for a developer who knows how to use AI effectively to build real business solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Application Development

• Design, develop, test and maintain web-based business applications and internal systems.

• Develop front-end interfaces, backend APIs, database components and system integrations.

• Translate business and functional requirements into working applications.

• Develop prototypes and Proof-of-Concept (POC) solutions quickly for business evaluation.

• Troubleshoot, debug and improve existing applications.

• Write maintainable, secure and properly structured production code.

AI-Assisted Software Development

• Use AI coding assistants and LLMs to accelerate software development, debugging, testing and documentation.

• Apply AI effectively throughout the software development lifecycle, including requirement analysis, solution design, coding, code review and troubleshooting.

• Critically review and validate AI-generated code instead of relying on generated output without understanding it.

• Explore new AI development tools and techniques that can improve development productivity and software quality.

• Develop applications incorporating Generative AI and LLM capabilities where appropriate.

AI & Automation Solutions

• Develop AI-enabled business applications such as:

  • Intelligent document processing and data extraction

  • OCR and document understanding

  • Internal AI assistants and chatbots

  • Knowledge search and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

  • Workflow and process automation

  • AI agents and tool-calling applications

  • Data processing and classification solutions

• Integrate applications with commercial and open-source AI models through APIs or locally hosted models.

• Evaluate when conventional programming, workflow automation or AI is the most appropriate solution to a business problem.

System Integration

• Develop and consume REST APIs and other system integration interfaces.

• Integrate new applications with existing business systems, databases and third-party platforms.

• Work with relational databases and understand proper database design and SQL.

• Support integration between cloud-based and on-premise applications where required.

Digital Transformation Projects

• Work directly with business users to understand operational requirements and pain points.

• Convert business requirements into practical technical solutions.

• Participate in brainstorming, prototyping and evaluation of digital transformation initiatives.

• Identify opportunities to automate repetitive and manual processes.

• Support implementation, testing, user acceptance testing (UAT) and deployment.

• Continuously improve implemented solutions based on user feedback and operational requirements.

Technical Requirements

Essential

• Diploma/Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent practical development experience.

• Hands-on software development experience.

• Good understanding of programming fundamentals, application architecture and software development practices.

• Experience in web application development.

• Experience developing and consuming REST APIs.

• Experience working with SQL and relational databases.

• Familiarity with Git and source-code management.

• Experience using AI coding tools or LLMs for software development.

• Ability to read, understand, troubleshoot and modify AI-generated code.

Preferred Technical Skills

Experience in some of the following would be advantageous:

Candidates are not expected to know every technology listed above. Strong programming fundamentals, problem-solving ability and the ability to learn and work effectively with AI tools are more important.
