Infinity Pro is seeking an experienced Senior AI Engineer / Machine Learning Engineer for a contract opportunity within a Federal Government agency.

You will help design, develop, integrate and maintain Artificial Intelligence and machine-learning solutions, working from experimentation and prototypes through to production deployment, monitoring and optimisation.

The scope includes conventional AI/ML, generative AI, large language models, retrieval-augmented generation and custom AI agents. This is a hands-on engineering opportunity for someone who enjoys writing reliable software and turning AI capabilities into useful business applications—not solely researching models or advising on AI strategy.

Essential Experience
  • Demonstrated programming and software-development capability: designing, coding, verifying, testing, documenting, maintaining and refactoring well-engineered programs or scripts.
  • Applying agreed development standards and tools, identifying software issues and implementing practical solutions.
  • Monitoring and reporting progress, collaborating with colleagues and contributing constructively to technical reviews.
Technical environment

One or combination of SAS, Teradata, Python, Cloudera Machine Learning (CML) and Red Hat OpenShift.

Please make your hands-on experience with any of these technologies is clear in your resume under each relevant position, including what you developed, integrated, deployed or supported.

Highly regarded but not essential
  • Baseline Security Clearance
  • A proven AI/ML engineering background, typically three or more years, with experience delivering scalable, production-ready applications.
  • Practical knowledge of LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG, embeddings, agents and generative AI application patterns.
  • Machine learning, statistical modelling, data cleansing, validation, quality assurance and feature preparation across complex datasets.
  • AI solution architecture and integration with enterprise applications, data platforms and analytical environments.
  • MLOps/LLMOps, CI/CD, deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement, together with effective AI testing and evaluation approaches.
  • An advanced degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics or a related discipline, focused on data science, machine learning or AI.
What you will work on
  • Developing AI/ML solutions, prototypes and proofs of concept that address defined business needs and can progress into production.
  • Building GenAI and LLM applications, including RAG, inference, orchestration and API-based enterprise integration.
  • Developing custom AI agents with well-defined tools, control flow, state and memory, retries, escalation paths and stopping conditions.
  • Preparing and transforming data, implementing automated testing and deployment, and maintaining clear technical documentation.
  • Evaluating accuracy, robustness, reliability, bias/fairness, hallucination and safety where applicable.
  • Monitoring model performance, data quality, drift, latency, availability, cost and business outcomes; troubleshooting issues and improving operational efficiency.
  • Applying security, privacy, access-management and responsible-AI controls, and contributing technical evidence to assurance and governance activities.
Location and working arrangements

The position can be based in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide or Hobart.

You will be expected to work onsite for the first six weeks, unless otherwise negotiated. Hybrid working may then be considered; it is not guaranteed from commencement.

You must live within reasonable travelling distance of the relevant office and be able to attend for business requirements or emergencies.

Security clearance

Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Australian Government Baseline security clearance, with the required clearance in place before starting work.

Applicants already holding current Baseline, NV1 or NV2 clearance are encouraged to apply. Please include your citizenship and current clearance status with your application.

The opportunity

An initial contract of up to 12 months, with extension options of up to a maximum 24 months, and an estimated commencement of 1 December 2026.
The brief allows up to 50 hours per week; the actual working schedule will need to be confirmed.

Please include your location, availability and expected hourly rate, specifying whether superannuation and GST are included or excluded.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide a separate one-page pitch, maximum 5,000 characters, and two professional referees. We will provide guidance on preparing the application.

Applications are being reviewed immediately ahead of the 29 October 2026 buyer deadline.

Best method to apply is using the application button on this advert. We can be contacted on (02) 9687 1025 for a confidential discussion but please ensure the resume has been sent.
Please ensure all documents are sent in Microsoft Word format.
