AI Software Engineer

Summary

Build and deploy AI systems for an energy business, handling data pipelines, retrieval, model selection, fine-tuning, and evaluation under real-world constraints.

12-month contract | UK / EU remote | Competitive rate

An exciting opportunity to work with one of our partners on an AI transformation project.

The role

You build the thing. You'll take the pod's roadmap and turn it into working, deployed, monitored AI systems inside a real energy business — with real data quality problems, real latency constraints, and real users who'll notice immediately when it breaks.

Expect full ownership: data pipelines, retrieval, model selection, fine-tuning, evaluation, deployment and the monitoring that keeps it honest in production.

What you'll do
  • Design and build LLM-powered applications — RAG pipelines, agentic workflows, and integrations with core energy and customer systems
  • Fine-tune and adapt open-weight models such as Llama (LoRA/QLoRA, instruction tuning, quantisation) and build on hosted models such as Claude where that's the better call
  • Build evaluation harnesses and regression suites, so we know when a change makes things worse
  • Own deployment and observability: cost, latency, token spend, drift, failure rates
  • Work directly with the designer on the interaction layer, not over a wall from it
  • Make pragmatic calls on infrastructure — we favour shipping over architectural purity
What you'll bring
  • 5–8 years in software or ML engineering, with recent, substantial LLM work
  • Hands-on fine-tuning experience with LLMs such as Llama, plus production experience building on APIs like Claude
  • Strong Python; solid grasp of the modern LLM stack (vector stores, orchestration frameworks, serving and inference optimisation)
  • Real production experience — you've supported what you built, not just demoed it
  • Proven delivery in fast-paced environments with small teams and tight timelines
  • Sound judgement on evaluation, safety and data handling
Nice to have
  • Cloud ML platforms (AWS Bedrock/SageMaker, Azure AI, GCP Vertex)
  • Time-series or IoT data — smart meter, sensor, or grid telemetry
  • Open-source contributions, or an interest in the energy transition

How to apply

Send a CV and a short note on the most relevant thing you've shipped to [email address]. For the designer role, please include a portfolio link.

We review on a rolling basis and aim to run a two-stage process: a conversation with the hiring manager, and a practical working session with the pod. No take-home exercises longer than two hours.

Alteam Limited is committed to building a diverse team. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds, and we're happy to adjust the process for anyone who needs it.
