Discussion

Summary

An engineer who directs and verifies AI-built software in a small in-house NZ team: framing problems, writing precise specs for AI agents, and proving their output correct. Core stack is C#/.NET, JavaScript/TypeScript with Angular, MSSQL/PostgreSQL, Git and CI/CD.

Salary: $150-160K plus benefits

ABOUT THE COMPANY:
The technology arm of a group of successful companies, operating across New Zealand. This is a small but high performing team that operates with direct feedback and low ceremony. You'll get to interact with passionate and talented developers, testers, product owners, subject matter experts and stakeholders across this awesome organisation. They work to a set of shared values and behaviours around integrity, open feedback and treating each other with respect.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Within this role you will direct, review and take responsibility for software built with AI. The role sits within the in-house team responsible for IT operations, custom software development, business analysis and digital innovation.

Reporting to the Development Manager, you'll work in a small delivery team alongside engineers, testers, business analysts and product owners. Most implementation is carried out by AI agents. The value of this role is in framing the problem, holding an accurate model of the system, specifying work precisely enough to be built, deciding when work is ready to build, and proving the result is correct.

This organisation delivers software through a defined lifecycle and each phase has a purpose, a required output, and a control point that only a person can clear. Agents carry out work within a phase but movement between phases is a human decision. Strong engineering fundamentals remain essential for this role; they are the basis on which AI output is judged, and they are what the role relies on when the tooling is wrong.

ABOUT YOU:
  • Demonstrated experience directing AI coding tools on production work, with examples of output accepted, amended or rejected, and the reasoning applied.
  • Evidence of writing specifications or requirements that other people, or agents, built from.
  • Three or more years developing and supporting software in production use.
  • Strong experience with C#, .NET, JavaScript or TypeScript, and a modern front end framework such as Angular.
  • Relational database experience with MSSQL or PostgreSQL, including schema design and query tuning.
  • Daily use of Git, and practical experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Automated testing experience, including tests written and maintained by the applicant.
  • Able to explain technical decisions, and the limits of AI-produced work, to non-technical staff.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
  • Work for a business that empowers their employees
  • Great working environment in the sunny Bay of Plenty, or NZ remote for the right person
  • Work with passionate and talented colleagues and exceptional leadership in a team with very low staff turnover
  • Good salary and benefits package
