About the AI Strategy Team
The team works closely with RP's broader AI-related efforts, including foundational research and Special Projects incubation, and plays a central role in shaping RP's contribution to the AI ecosystem in 2026 and beyond.
The initial team is small and flat: you will report directly to the AI Strategy Program Lead and work alongside one other Analyst / Senior Analyst.
We are looking for a candidate to ideally start by November 2nd 2026, however we would love for a candidate to start sooner if possible. While this is a full-time role with an expected average time commitment of 40 hours/week, we are able to making accommodations for applicants who require slightly fewer work hours. Salaries for reduced work hours will be adjusted proportionately.
Strategic research and analysis under uncertainty
- Conduct research and analysis on transformative AI—its trajectories, potential upsides, catastrophic and existential risks, and the interventions that could shift long-run outcomes
- Get up to speed rapidly in new technical, governance, and field-building domains as the team's priorities evolve
- Produce decision-relevant outputs, such as landscape analyses, frameworks, short-form memos, and briefings, that are clearly written and tailored to audiences such as funders, policymakers, and project founders
- Balance analytical rigor with speed, enabling rapid responses where the strategic environment demands it
- Regularly reassess whether your current workstream remains the highest-value use of your time, and pivot quickly if a more impactful and neglected strategy emerges
- Stay up to date on developments in AI capabilities, deployment pathways, governance approaches, and emerging risks
Project management
- Self-manage your priorities and workload in a remote, asynchronous, and international environment, while staying within the scope of research set by the AI Strategy Program Leader
- Contribute to the team's internal processes for prioritization and research quality
External engagement
- Quickly build relationships with external experts—researchers, policy specialists, funders, and practitioners—and elicit their judgments on which tactics would best accomplish the team's strategies
- Synthesize expert input, alongside your own analysis, into clear and actionable recommendations
- Potentially represent the team at selected workshops and conferences
Scope the incubation of new initiatives
- Help decide whether especially promising strategies should become internal projects, or be incubated as new organizations in collaboration with RP's Special Projects team
- Assess proposed projects for strategic fit, theory of change, tractability, and potential impact
Required
- Generalist range. A track record of getting up to speed quickly in new knowledge domains and of producing credible work in areas you didn't previously know well
- Research and writing. Strong ability to synthesize complex information and communicate clear strategic insights in writing
- Autonomy and self-management. The ability to plan your own work, unblock yourself, and deliver high-quality outputs with light-touch oversight
- Excellent project management. Experience managing research projects—scoping, research process, timelines, and deliverables
- Comfort with ambiguity. Sound judgment under deep uncertainty, and a demonstrated willingness to pivot strategies when a more impactful and neglected opportunity emerges
- Rapid relationship-building with experts. The ability to quickly establish credibility and rapport with external experts, and to skilfully elicit their opinions, especially controversial or unpopular views
- Knowledge of transformative AI. Experience or knowledge relating to transformative AI, including the potential upsides of highly capable AI and/or its catastrophic and existential risks
- Mission alignment. Strong alignment with RP's mission and with efforts to reduce existential risk and secure beneficial outcomes from advanced AI
Preferred
- Experience producing decision-relevant research for funders, policymakers, think tanks, or senior leadership
- Background in fields such as public policy, economics, philosophy, cognitive science, computer science, computer engineering
- Familiarity with, and ideally relationships in, the ecosystem of people, organizations, governments, and companies concerned with navigating transformative AI
- Experience with forecasting or structured approaches to reasoning under uncertainty
- Experience collaborating closely with both research and operational teams
- We offer an annual salary between $110,000 (€99,782) - $150,000 USD pre-tax for a full-time position, prorated for part-time work.
- Candidates with more relevant experience may be hired at the Senior Analyst title. The exact salary will be based on the candidate's prior relevant experience and corresponding title level.

Additional Information
- Work Environment and Visa Sponsorship. This role is fully remote and we are able to legally hire in many countries. In certain cases, we may be able to provide visa sponsorship to the US or UK and help candidates relocate. - Travel: The person in this role can expect to attend ~3 workshops/conferences each year, sometimes requiring international flights. Additionally, there is an annual retreat (5 workdays) that requires air or train travel to attend in person. We ask that you only apply if you are able to meet these travel requirements.
- Working Hours. While we welcome applicants from all time zones, our current team members are mostly based in various American and European time zones. Given the collaborative nature of our work, you will be expected to attend some meetings during working hours between UTC−8 and UTC+1, which may mean early mornings or late evenings depending on your location.
