AltaGas - Sr. Business Analyst, Commodity Position Management

As a key member of AltaGas' Commercial team, the Senior Business Analyst, Commodity Position Management plays a critical role in supporting commodity marketing and trading activities across the organization. Working closely with Supply, Marketing, Logistics, Accounting, and Risk teams, this position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of physical and financial trading positions within AltaGas' Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) platform, Allegro.

Reporting to the Manager, Commodity Position Management, the successful candidate will partner closely with the Marketing & Trading Business Analytics team to reconcile positions, resolve discrepancies, develop business intelligence solutions, and provide actionable insights that support commercial decision-making. This role combines commodity market knowledge, data analytics expertise, and operational awareness to optimize risk management, settlements, and reporting processes.

You will:

  • Own the accuracy and integrity of commodity positions within AltaGas' ETRM system (Allegro) for an assigned trading desk.
  • Perform daily position reconciliation activities to validate planned, forecasted, nominated, and actual commodity movements.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, models, and reporting tools that transform complex data into meaningful business insights.
  • Investigate and resolve trading, risk, and reporting discrepancies to support daily risk reporting and end-of-day (EOD) sign-off activities.
  • Ensure positions are accurately reflected and prepared for settlement and invoicing through collaboration with Accounting and Commercial teams.
  • Partner with Logistics, Accounting, and Commercial stakeholders to resolve data and transactional issues impacting settlements and reporting.
  • Monitor and maintain trade optionality within Allegro to ensure accurate risk exposure and position reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, automation, reporting capabilities, and data quality across commercial operations.
  • Support the development and enhancement of business analytics tools, models, and reporting frameworks.

You have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Economics, Finance, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience analyzing commercial, operational, or financial data within the energy industry; Midstream experience is strongly preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and Power BI, with experience using SQL, Python, or other reporting/query tools considered an asset.
  • Experience working with ETRM/CTRM platforms, preferably Allegro.
  • Strong understanding of NGL, crude oil, and natural gas markets, including the impact of commercial transactions on positions and risk.
  • Knowledge of logistics, scheduling, settlements, or accounting processes within a commodity trading environment is an asset.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex datasets, identify discrepancies, and develop practical solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across Commercial, Logistics, Accounting, and Risk teams.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work independently while supporting and mentoring junior team members.
