SEMPHN is looking for an Analytics Engineer to join our Strategy, Performance, and Impact directorate and help build trusted, high-quality data and analytics products that support better decision-making across the health system.

About the Role

Reporting to the Analytics Engineering Lead, the Analytics Engineer will build and maintain the transformation and semantic layers that turn SEMPHN's curated data into trusted, reusable analytics products.

You'll work across dbt, SQL, Python and Power BI, transforming validated source data into well-governed data models, semantic models, dashboards and reporting products that stakeholders can rely on.

You'll work within established data standards, metric definitions and governance frameworks, translating business questions into practical and scalable data solutions.

What You'll Do

Analytics Engineering & Data Modelling

• Design, build and maintain tested and documented dbt transformation models.

• Write optimised SQL for data extraction, transformation, and analytical purposes.

• Use Python for data preparation, cleaning, reconciliation, and analysis.

• Profile and explore source data to understand quality, structure, and feasibility before developing BI products.

• Develop and maintain data models that provide a consistent source of business logic.

• Participate in peer code reviews and Git-based development workflows.

• Undertake exploratory and one-off analysis to support business and population health needs.

Business Intelligence & Reporting

• Develop and maintain Power BI semantic models, reports, dashboards and apps within SEMPHN's enterprise reporting platform, PRISM.

• Apply DAX and Power Query to develop effective and user-friendly reporting solutions.

• Manage scheduled dataset refreshes, monitor reliability, and troubleshoot failures.

• Contribute to the ongoing lifecycle management of reporting assets, including simplifying, consolidating and retiring products where appropriate.

• Use agreed adoption and user experience measures to support continuous improvement of reporting products.

• Support data collection, analysis and reporting for program and service evaluation, research and population health planning.

• Respond to specific and ad hoc data requests from internal and external stakeholders.

Insight & Stakeholder Engagement

• Translate complex data and population health information into clear and meaningful insights.

• Communicate findings to a range of audiences, including SEMPHN staff, Executive, the Clinical and Community Council and regional health service planning partnerships.

• Prepare written reports, articles, and presentations as required.

• Identify opportunities to improve data processes, reporting, and analytics through automation and better use of technology.

• Work collaboratively with teams across SEMPHN to understand their data and reporting needs.

About You

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical capability with curiosity, problem-solving skills, and an ability to understand the business question behind the data.

You will ideally have:

• Demonstrated experience in analytics engineering, data analytics, business intelligence, or related discipline.

• Strong hands-on experience with SQL and data transformation.

• Experience developing and maintaining dbt models, or strong experience with comparable data transformation frameworks.

• Demonstrated experience developing Power BI reports and semantic models, including DAX and Power Query.

• Experience using Python for data preparation, automation, and/or analysis.

• An understanding of data modelling and semantic modelling principles.

• Experience working with version control and Git-based development and peer review processes.

• Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.

• The ability to translate business requirements and questions into practical data solutions is important.

• Strong attention to data quality, accuracy, documentation, and governance.

• Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to non-technical audiences.

Experience working with health, population health or other complex datasets would be highly regarded, but we're equally interested in your ability to learn, collaborate and apply your technical skills to meaningful problems.
