Senior Android & Staff Engineer – Insurtech (Greenfield Native Build)

Role snapshot

The opportunity

Our client is a fast-growing insurtech making insurance simpler, fairer and fully digital. Their app is how customers get quotes, manage policies and make claims, so it sits at the heart of the business.

They're moving away from React Native and rebuilding the Android app natively. This is a genuine greenfield project: no legacy codebase, no inherited tech debt, and the chance to set the architecture, standards and tooling from day one. As one of the first native Android hires, you'll shape how the app is built for years to come and help grow the Android team.

What you'll do

  • Architect and build the new native Android app from the ground up in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
  • Define the app's architecture, modularisation strategy, coding standards and testing approach
  • Plan and deliver the migration from React Native, achieving feature parity and a smooth switchover for existing customers
  • Build core insurance journeys: onboarding and KYC, quotes, policy management, payments and claims
  • Set up CI/CD, automated testing and release pipelines on the Play Store
  • Work closely with Product, Design, Backend and iOS engineers to deliver a consistent cross-platform experience
  • Ensure security, privacy and compliance standards suited to a regulated (FCA) environment
  • Mentor engineers and help hire and grow the Android team

What you'll bring

  • 5+ years of professional Android development, with production apps shipped to the Play Store
  • Expert Kotlin, with strong hands-on Jetpack Compose experience
  • Proven experience building an app from scratch, or leading a major re-architecture
  • Deep knowledge of modern Android architecture (MVVM/MVI, Clean Architecture, multi-module builds)
  • Strong with Coroutines and Flow, dependency injection (Hilt/Koin) and Gradle build tooling
  • A solid testing mindset: unit, integration and UI tests
  • Experience integrating secure REST/GraphQL APIs and handling sensitive customer data
  • Comfortable making architecture decisions, documenting them and bringing others along

Nice to have

  • Experience migrating from React Native, Flutter or another cross-platform framework to native
  • Background in insurtech, fintech or other regulated industries
  • Familiarity with KYC, identity verification or payment SDKs (e.g. Stripe, Onfido)
  • Kotlin Multiplatform experience for sharing logic with iOS
  • Experience building design systems in Compose
  • Accessibility expertise and a passion for inclusive design
