Description

Animal Caretaker – Layer Hens

About the Position:

Opal Foods is seeking a dependable and hardworking Animal Caretaker to join our Layer Farm team in Roggen, Colorado. In this role, you will help care for our layer hens, maintain clean and safe barn environments, and support the daily operations that contribute to healthy birds and quality egg production.

The ideal candidate is attentive to detail, comfortable working around live poultry, and committed to animal welfare, farm safety, and maintaining high standards of care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor the health and well-being of layer hens by regularly walking through barns, observing bird behavior, and removing deceased birds as needed.
  • Ensure feed and water systems are functioning properly and that hens have adequate food, water, and ventilation.
  • Adjust barn vents and curtains as needed to maintain appropriate environmental conditions.
  • Maintain barn cleanliness and sanitation by sweeping floors and using backpack blowers to remove dust from assigned areas.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks and report more complex maintenance needs to the appropriate team members.
  • Work collaboratively with other Animal Caretakers to support daily farm operations.
  • Assist the Production Farm Lead with additional projects and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Follow all company policies, biosecurity procedures, animal welfare standards, and applicable governmental regulations.

Qualifications and Physical Requirements

Successful candidates must be able to:
  • Walk and remain on their feet for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Bend, stoop, reach, and kneel as needed to perform daily duties.
  • Lift and handle hens weighing approximately five pounds.
  • Work comfortably inside poultry barns while surrounded by live birds.
  • Work six days per week, including weekends and holidays as scheduled, with one weekday off.
  • Follow established safety, sanitation, and animal care procedures.

Previous farm or poultry experience may be helpful, but a strong work ethic, dependability, and willingness to learn are important qualities for this position.
