Applications Development Senior Programmer Analyst

The Applications Development Senior Programmer Analyst is an intermediate level position responsible for participation in the establishment and implementation of new or revised application systems and programs in coordination with the Technology team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for bridging the gap between software development and IT operations by automating and streamlining our operations and processes, with a focus on our containerized environments. You will work with software developers and other operations staff to oversee code releases, combining your understanding of both engineering and coding to create a more efficient and reliable development lifecycle on the OpenShift platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • CI/CD Pipeline Management: Design, build, and maintain our continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines to automate the build, test, and deployment of applications on OpenShift.
  • OpenShift Platform Management: Serve as a subject matter expert for the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. This includes cluster installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Develop and manage infrastructure using IaC principles with tools like Terraform and Ansible to automate the provisioning of OpenShift clusters and underlying infrastructure.
  • Containerization and Orchestration: Work extensively with containerization technologies like Docker and the Kubernetes/OpenShift ecosystem to build, deploy, and manage our microservices architecture.
  • Automation: Automate manual operational tasks and processes to improve efficiency and reliability. Write scripts using languages like Python, Bash, or PowerShell. Automating application releases, deployment, configuration and other aspects of software development lifecycle
  • Monitoring and Logging: Implement and manage robust monitoring, logging, and alerting for the OpenShift platform and the applications running on it, using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and the ELK Stack.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate closely with development, QA, and security teams to ensure smooth and timely releases and to foster a culture of DevSecOps.
  • Security: Implement and enforce security best practices within the OpenShift environment, including managing security context constraints (SCCs), network policies, vulnerability scanning, and secret management.
  • Troubleshooting and Support: Provide expert-level support for our production and pre-production OpenShift environments, including troubleshooting cluster-level issues, application deployment problems, and performance tuning.
  • Documentation: Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation for our OpenShift infrastructure, configurations, and operational procedures.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Container Orchestration: Deep, hands-on experience with Red Hat OpenShift and Kubernetes is mandatory. This includes cluster administration, application lifecycle management, and understanding of core components.
  • Cloud Computing: Extensive experience deploying and managing OpenShift Container Platform across various infrastructures, including on-premise (bare metal, virtualized) and hybrid-cloud environments.
  • CI/CD Tools: Proficiency with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, Tekton, Harness, particularly in the context of OpenShift. Experience with Java build tools (Gradle/Maven preferred) and databases (Oracle/MongoDB preferred)
  • Infrastructure as Code: Hands-on experience with tools like Terraform and Ansible for automation and configuration management.
  • Containerization: Strong understanding of Docker, container image building and container registries.
  • Scripting: Strong scripting skills in languages like Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Monitoring Tools: Experience with monitoring and observability tools integrated with OpenShift, such as Prometheus, Grafana, and the EFK/ELK Stack.
  • Version Control: Expertise in using Git and Git-based workflows.
  • Operating Systems: Proficient in Linux administration (RHEL/CentOS preferred).

Soft Skills

  • Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail, especially in complex, distributed systems.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to new technologies and changing business requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8 + years of total experience of which 5+ years of DevOps experience
  • Experience with service mesh technologies like Istio or OpenShift Service Mesh.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts within Kubernetes/OpenShift (e.g., CNI, Ingress, Egress, NetworkPolicies).
  • Experience with database administration and management (SQL and NoSQL).
  • Experience with messaging middleware (Kafka, MQ)
  • Understanding of distributed systems architecture, microservices, virtualization techniques
  • Has the ability to operate with a limited level of direct supervision.
  • Can exercise independence of judgement and autonomy.
