Position Summary:

The Part-Time American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter provides high-quality interpreting services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, faculty, staff, and visitors participating in NJIT academic and university-sponsored activities. The interpreter facilitates equitable access to communication by accurately, effectively, and impartially interpreting between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL), while adhering to the professional standards established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct. Interpreting assignments may include classrooms, laboratories, advising appointments, tutoring sessions, meetings, orientations, campus events, and other approved university activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides interpreting/transliterating services for deaf and hard of hearing students and other hearing-impaired college clientele using manual and oral methods of communication.

  • Effectively, accurately, and impartially conveys the thought, intent, and spirit of a speaker to deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

  • Interprets both receptively and expressively.

  • Assesses individual communication skills in speech, lip-reading, signs, and fingerspelling in order to utilize the most appropriate mode of communication with each individual.

  • Attends advising sessions, classes, labs, faculty/student conferences, tutoring sessions, and other authorized college-related activities with deaf and hard of hearing students to interpret enrollment and other college information, classroom discussions, and campus activities.

  • Observes problems encountered and progress made by deaf and hard of hearing students and makes referrals to appropriate support staff.

  • Utilizes sign vocabulary adequate to ensure proper interpretation for a variety of academic or technical subject areas and builds knowledge base of subject matter.

  • Maintains professional and ethical standards with regard to the privacy of students and the confidentiality of information exchanged in interpreting situations.

  • If offered the opportunity to interpret for special projects such as concerts, other campus activities, and meetings with hard of hearing guests, vendors, and other clientele.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Effectively, accurately, and impartially conveys the thought, intent, and spirit of a speaker to deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Perquisite Qualifications:

  • New Jersey Educational Services certificate with Educational Interpreter - Sign Language Interpreting endorsement or eligible for New Jersey certification / New Jersey State Certified Sign Language Interpreters

  • Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (E.I.P.A.) score of 3.5 or more

  • Must hold a High School diploma

  • New Jersey residence within one (1) year from date of hire

  • 1-3 years' experience in educational interpreting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience interpreting in STEM or technical higher education environments.

  • Experience working with students with multiple disabilities.

  • Familiarity with assistive technology and remote interpreting platforms.

  • Knowledge of higher education disability services and accommodation processes.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform repetitive arm, hand, and finger movements associated with ASL interpreting.

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.

  • Ability to travel across campus to various interpreting assignments.

Work Schedule:

  • Part-time, 10-month appointment aligned with the academic calendar.

  • Primary work period includes the Fall and Spring semesters.

  • Occasional evening and weekend assignments may be required to support university programs and events.

Compensation:

  • $60.00–$85.00 per hour, commensurate with education, certification, and experience

At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
