About the Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy is a PhD-granting department with strengths in philosophy of science, philosophy of cognitive science, and applied ethics and social/political philosophy. We comprise 14 full-time faculty, more than 25 active PhD students, and affiliated faculty across the University.

Department faculty lead the Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS), the UC Center for Humanities and Technology (CHaT), and the Cincinnati Ethics Center. The department also has close connections to the Institute for Research in Sensing (IRiS) and the Center for Cognition, Action, and Perception (CAP). Many department faculty pursue interdisciplinary or empirically informed research projects.

Job Overview

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor or tenured Full Professor to begin in August 2027 with an Area of Specialization (AOS) in Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Science (general, or specific sciences) or Ethics (theoretical, applied, or social/political). Area of Competence (AOC) is open. The standard teaching load is 2-2.

Essential Functions

• Teach courses in Philosophy, including introductory general education courses, upper-level undergraduate courses that serve the Philosophy BA program, and graduate seminars that serve the Philosophy PhD program.
• Conduct and publish research in Philosophy in their AOS.
• Advise graduate students and supervise Teaching Assistants.
• Contribute service or committee work to the department (such as the Undergraduate or Graduate Studies Committee), college (such as grant or award review committees), and profession (such as peer review for journals or service in professional associations).

Minimum Requirements

Prior to effective date of appointment, all of the following:

• A PhD in Philosophy or a closely related discipline
• An Area of Specialization (AOS) in one of the following: Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Science (general, or specific sciences) or Ethics (theoretical, applied, or social/political).
• One semester of teaching experience at the college or university level, either as instructor or teaching assistant.

In addition to filling out the online application, candidates at the Assistant Professor level should upload as “additional documents”: a CV, cover letter, statement of research interests and plans, teaching dossier, and one writing sample. Because the system does not manage confidential reference letters, candidates should arrange to have at least three confidential letters of recommendation sent via Interfolio or other dossier service, or by the letter writers themselves, to the Search Committee Chair at philosophy-search@uc.edu.

Candidates at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level need only upload a CV, cover letter, and the names of three people who can serve as references. References will not be contacted for letters until a later stage and candidates will be notified before references are contacted.
