Support Operations. Develop People. Drive Accountability.
Are you the type of leader who enjoys helping others learn, solving complex problems, and finding ways to make processes more efficient? Are you someone who naturally looks beyond your own responsibilities and thinks about how you can make the entire team stronger?
At Dr. Tavel Family Eyecare, we have proudly served Indiana communities for over 80 years and continue to grow as one of the largest and most respected eyecare providers in the state. Across our locations, we combine medical expertise, retail excellence, and exceptional patient care to deliver an experience that truly stands apart.
Our Insurance Department plays a critical role in supporting our offices, protecting revenue, and ensuring patients receive accurate and timely insurance support. As an Assistant Billing Manager, you will work closely with the Billing and Systems Manager to support daily operations, develop team members, strengthen processes, and help drive the department forward.
This role is designed for someone who has existing knowledge of billing and is ready to expand their impact beyond their individual workload. You will serve as a resource for the insurance team, support employee development, help identify and solve departmental problems, and assist with implementing improvements that make our processes more accurate, efficient, and consistent.
Daily Responsibilities:
• Support the Billing and Systems Manager in leading day-to-day Billing Department operations, helping ensure claims are processed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with payer requirements.
• Support the development of the remote billing team through coaching, training, performance feedback, accountability conversations, and employee development.
• Assist with overseeing medical and vision insurance billing processes, including claims submission, denial resolution, appeals, collections management, and accounts receivable follow-up.
•Assist with monitoring billing performance, denial trends, and accounts receivable activity to identify and report recurring issues, opportunities for improvement, and concerns that may impact financial performance to the Billing and Systems Manager.
• Assist with provider credentialing processes, including enrollments, recredentialing deadlines, and payer participation requirements, helping ensure requirements are completed timely to prevent reimbursement disruption.
• Identify process improvement opportunities, help implement solutions, and escalate critical operational concerns while partnering with the Billing and Systems Manager and other departments to improve workflows across the organization.
What We’re Looking For (Minimum Requirements):
• Leadership experience — Demonstrated ability to guide, coach, support, and hold others accountable.
• Healthcare billing expertise — Strong understanding of medical and vision insurance billing, claims, denials, appeals, accounts receivable, and payer requirements.
• Analytical mindset — Ability to identify patterns, solve problems quickly, and proactively prevent operational or financial issues.
• Strong communication skills — Able to explain complex information clearly and communicate effectively with team members, offices, and leadership.
• High accountability — You take ownership, follow through consistently, and address problems directly instead of allowing issues to linger.
• Adaptability — Willing to learn, adjust, and embrace changes that improve the department.
• Organization — Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Perks & Benefits:
• Paid Time Off and Paid Holidays
• 401(k) Retirement Plan
• Health, Dental, and Rx Insurance
• 100% Paid Parental Leave
• Free Eye Exams & Glasses (including immediate and extended family discounts)
• Company-Paid Life Insurance
• Remote work flexibility (Indiana based preferred)
You Will Thrive Here If You Have:
• Coaching & Development Skills — You are willing to hold people accountable, address difficult situations directly, and make tough decisions when necessary. You genuinely enjoy helping others learn and improve.
• Operational Mindset — You naturally think in systems, workflow optimization, and long-term efficiency.
• Problem Solver Mentality — You enjoy identifying issues, finding root causes, and building better solutions.
• High Attention to Detail — You understand how small errors can create major downstream operational and financial impact.
• Ownership Mentality — You proactively identify problems, take initiative to find solutions, and bring issues to leadership with thoughtful recommendations when additional support or direction is needed.
