Assistant Chief/Senior Officer in Charge

Position Summary

Reporting Authority: Chief of Police

General Function: The Assistant Chief / Senior Officer in Charge assists the Chief of Police in implementing the College's security policies and procedures and maintain peace, order, safety, and security for students, faculty, staff, and the public. This position protects the College' physical facilities, ground, and property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal activities. This position supervises four (4) plus police officer. This position must be held by a current APOSTC certified police officer.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Essential Job Functions:

•Ensure increased efficiency and effectiveness of the department by enforcing procedures, methods and policies.
•Provides campus security, law enforcement protection, and assists in civil defense preparedness.
•Supervises and schedules security officer to ensure coverage after hours, weekends, and holidays.
•Provides foot and vehicular patrol of campus.
•Safeguards students, faculty, staff, authorized campus visitors, college property, buildings, and equipment.
•Responds to and investigates all incidents on campus including but not limited to criminal, security and safety, and college violations.
•Coordinates storage of criminal evidence and destruction of evidence upon completion of criminal cases.
•Ensures all campus facilities are secured at appropriate times.
•Monitors student activities and other events on campus to ensure security, safety, and adherence to college policies.
•Prepares accident and incident/offense reports.
•Manages college parking enforcement program .
•Assists in coordinating drills and exercises, including evacuation and lockdown drills in every building in compliance with current policy directives.
•Assists in providing training to faculty and staff concerning indicators of potentially problematic behaviors so that positive behavioral intervention scan allow the at-risk individuals to thrive.
•Assists in coordinating training for college personnel on matters of safety and security.
•Assists in the development of plans and procedures for campus security, emergency response, and other related matters.
•Must be willing to work on campus/instructional site and on all shifts based on the needs of the college.
•Assist in publishing an Annual Security Report by October 1 of each year and distribute to all students and college staff annually.
•Maintain a Daily Crime Log as required by the Clery Act.
•Assists the Chief of Police in developing partnerships with outside agencies and organizations that can contribute to the quality and success of campus safety and security·
•Comply with policies of the Alabama Community College System.
•Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Salary: Salary Schedule C3 - 03 $69, 509 - $107,176

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
•A minimum of a high school diploma or GED Certificate is required.
•Minimum of three (3) years of employment experience as a police officer.
APOSTC minimum Standards Certification must be current.
•Must have experience using MOVE system to include eCrime, eCrash, MapClick and eForms
•Valid Alabama driver's license.
•Must be insurable by the College's insurance carrier.

Preferred Requirements:
•Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
•Employment experience as a police officer in a college setting.
•Police officer experience at an administrative supervisory level.
