WSP is seeking Assistant Consultants to join our large and growing technical support team in India (Noida/Bengaluru/Mumbai), working closely with our UK-wide national Ecology team.

The successful candidate will support data delivery and GIS-based outputs that underpin ecological assessments and reporting. You will play a key role in ensuring high-quality, efficient, and client-focused project delivery by handling, analysing, and visualising ecological data collected across UK projects.

The role is primarily focused on data handling, GIS analysis, and technical support, contributing to a wide range of environmental and multidisciplinary projects across commercial and scientific sectors.

Data Management & Analysis

  • Handling, sorting, validation, and preparation of ecological datasets
  • Managing, interpreting, and manipulating large and complex data sets
  • Ensuring data quality control, validation, and adherence to QA/QC processes
  • Supporting structured data storage, metadata standards, and version control

GIS & Spatial Deliverables

  • Preparation of ecological cartography (e.g., habitat maps, species distribution plans) to recognised standards
  • Performing spatial analysis, including calculation of habitat losses and gains
  • Supporting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) analysis and preparation of associated digital inputs
  • Developing GIS templates and data capture tools for use in field data collection platforms
  • Generating high-quality figures and mapping outputs for reports, publications, and consultations

Technical Support to Ecology Projects

  • Preparing supporting information for European Protected Species licensing and assessments
  • Assisting in preparation of habitat mitigation and compensation design plans
  • Supporting HRA/EIA deliverables through data and mapping inputs
  • Interpreting ecological survey data and translating it into usable outputs

Data & Systems Management

  • Purchasing and maintaining datasets (e.g., OS Mapping and third-party datasets) in compliance with licensing agreements
  • Ensuring adherence to data security, licensing, and compliance requirements

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across ecology, planning, and EIA
  • Actively promoting knowledge sharing and development of best practices
  • Supporting internal stakeholders and building strong working relationships across WSP
  • Contributing to process improvements and efficiency enhancements

Key Competencies / Skills

Mandatory Skills

  • Experience in handling and managing datasets for analysis, including large and complex datasets
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Spatial Analyst)
  • Strong skills in spatial data analysis and interpretation
  • Understanding of ecological data types and survey outputs
  • Ability to perform data validation, QA/QC, and quality assurance checks
  • Familiarity with UK environmental datasets and standards (e.g., MAGIC, DEFRA, OS Mapping)
  • Ability to interpret ecological data and convert into spatial outputs and insights
  • Understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) principles and data requirements
  • Awareness of data management best practices, including metadata and structured storage
  • Knowledge of data licensing, compliance, and secure handling of third-party datasets
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good communication skills and ability to work independently and within teams
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage multiple deliverables in a deadline-driven environment

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in ecological consultancy or conservation-related work
  • Database management experience
  • Exposure to statistical and spatial analysis techniques
  • Familiarity with Google Maps, Google Earth Professional
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience in automation or workflow optimisation in GIS
  • Exposure to UK-based projects or international environmental standards
  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related discipline
