Assistant Controller
Position Overview
Southern Impression Homes is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to serve as a key leader within our Accounting team and support the VP of Finance & Accounting. This position will take a leading role in the monthly close, financial reporting, annual audit, technical accounting, and construction accounting processes while helping develop the accounting team and improve processes and controls.
The ideal candidate will have strong U.S. GAAP knowledge, proven experience leading annual audits, deep ASC 606 revenue recognition experience, advanced Excel capabilities, and the ability to partner effectively with Operations, Construction, Purchasing, and executive leadership. CPA strongly preferred; candidates with significant construction, homebuilding, or technical accounting leadership experience may also be considered. Experience with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and a construction, homebuilding, real estate development, or general contractor background is strongly preferred.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, including close calendars, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement review.
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial reporting packages for internal leadership, including variance analysis, balance sheet review, and operationally relevant financial insights.
- Serve as a key liaison with external auditors and coordinate annual audit planning, audit schedules, supporting documentation, technical accounting analyses, and management responses.
- Maintain strong audit-ready documentation for significant accounting areas, estimates, judgments, and technical accounting conclusions.
- Lead revenue recognition analyses and ensure compliance with ASC 606, including contract review, performance obligation assessment, transaction price considerations, timing of revenue recognition, and supporting documentation.
- Support accounting for general contractor contracts, including owner billings, pay applications, retainage, change orders, committed costs, lien waiver documentation, and supporting schedules.
- Partner with Operations and Construction teams to ensure project cost activity, contract billing, and accounting records are complete, accurate, and timely.
- Review job cost activity, project margins, work-in-place activity, accruals, and related construction accounting entries for accuracy and completeness.
- Evaluate and document accounting treatment for complex transactions, new contracts, entity activity, consolidations, and other technical accounting matters.
- Support financial analysis, cash flow reporting, and other management reporting as needed.
- Develop, document, and improve accounting policies, procedures, close processes, reporting templates, and internal controls.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, automation, and scalability within accounting and reporting processes.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop assigned accounting team members, including reviewing work, providing technical guidance, supporting professional development, and promoting accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
- Assist with special projects, system enhancements, process improvements, acquisitions, new entity activity, and other strategic initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience leading financial close processes, audits, and technical accounting matters.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial statement preparation, and technical accounting documentation.
- Strong understanding and practical application of ASC 606 Revenue from Contracts with Customers.
- Experience managing month-end close processes, account reconciliations, accruals, financial reporting, and variance analysis.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
- Experience with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne strongly preferred.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with executives, auditors, and operational leaders.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation strongly preferred.
- Experience within residential construction, homebuilding, land development, real estate development, or general contracting.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting, project costing, pay applications, change order administration, and lien waiver processes.
- Experience applying ASC 606 to construction, development, or long-term customer contracts.
- Experience with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne modules such as General Accounting, Job Cost, Accounts Payable, and related reporting tools.
- Experience preparing consolidated financial statements and supporting multi-entity accounting structures.
- Prior supervisory or management experience within an accounting department.
- Public accounting experience with audit exposure to construction, real estate, homebuilding, or development clients.
