Location: Shrewsbury

Salary: £37,000 – £41,000 per year

Employment: Permanent

The Role

As Assistant General Manager, you will work alongside the General Manager to lead daily operations, motivate the team, and maintain impeccable hospitality standards across every shift.

• Leading, coaching, and motivating front-of-house and back-of-house teams to consistently deliver seamless, guest-focused service.

• Supporting the General Manager with operational planning, financial oversight, and commercial decision-making across all trading sessions.

• Managing stock control, regular inventory audits, and supplier relationships to minimise waste and protect gross profit margins.

• Overseeing staff rotas, ensuring effective shift coverage during peak trading times while managing budgeted labour costs.

• Driving revenue by encouraging proactive upselling, supporting promotional events, and maximising table covers without compromising quality.

• Ensuring full compliance with health and safety regulations, food hygiene standards, and statutory licensing laws.

• Resolving guest feedback promptly and professionally to secure positive outcomes and encourage long-term customer loyalty.

• Delivering structured onboarding, job training, and ongoing career development for new and existing team members.

• Reviewing daily sales performance, analysing key operational metrics, and implementing practical improvements where needed.

About You

• Proven management or supervisory experience within a fast-paced, high-standard hospitality setting.

• Strong commercial understanding, including familiarity with labour budgets, stock management, and profit margins.

• An engaging leadership style with the ability to coach, motivate, and develop a diverse hospitality team.

• Outstanding communication skills and the natural warmth required to engage guests and build rapport.

• Calmness under pressure and the ability to think quickly when handling operational challenges during busy services.

• Flexibility to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends, and public holidays in line with trading needs.

• A valid Personal Licence holder status and up-to-date food hygiene certification are desirable.

• Practical experience with modern hospitality EPOS systems, rota management tools, and table reservation software.

A Typical Day

Your day begins with a thorough walk-through of the venue, reviewing the bookings schedule, and liaising with the kitchen team on daily specials and prep. Ahead of opening, you will lead the team briefing to share priorities and align everyone on service targets. During trade, you will be on the floor setting the pace, welcoming guests, managing service flow, and supporting your team through peak periods. Later, you will balance the day's takings, adjust upcoming rotas, complete shift handovers, and ensure the venue is fully prepped and secure for the morning.
