The Assistant Grocery Manager supports the Grocery Manager in overseeing all aspects of Grocery Department operations to ensure exceptional customer service, product availability, merchandising excellence, inventory accuracy, sales growth, profitability, and team development. This position assists in directing daily operations, supervising associates, maintaining department standards, and ensuring a safe, organized, and customer-focused shopping experience.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations- Assist in overseeing daily operations of the Grocery Department.
- Support execution of company programs, promotional initiatives, and merchandising plans.
- Ensure shelves, displays, and promotional locations remain stocked and customer-ready.
- Maintain department standards for cleanliness, organization, and safety.
- Monitor department conditions and take corrective action when needed.
- Serve as Manager-on-Duty when assigned.
- Deliver and promote exceptional customer service throughout the department.
- Assist customers with product inquiries, product locations, and special requests.
- Resolve customer concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Foster a customer-first culture focused on service, convenience, and satisfaction.
- Support associates in creating positive customer interactions.
- Assist with maintaining attractive, well-stocked displays and promotional locations.
- Ensure proper pricing, signage, and merchandising standards are consistently executed.
- Monitor sales trends and support initiatives to maximize department performance.
- Execute seasonal, holiday, and promotional merchandising programs.
- Help identify opportunities to improve sales and customer engagement.
- Assist in managing inventory levels to support sales while minimizing out-of-stocks and shrink.
- Monitor replenishment activities and product availability.
- Support inventory counts, ordering processes, and inventory accuracy initiatives.
- Ensure proper product rotation and dating procedures are followed.
- Identify and address shrink opportunities through effective inventory management practices.
- Assist with recruiting, training, coaching, and developing department associates.
- Provide leadership and guidance to associates during daily operations.
- Promote accountability, teamwork, and associate engagement.
- Assist with scheduling and labor management activities.
- Support performance management and employee development efforts.
- Monitor workflow and department productivity.
- Ensure tasks are completed efficiently and according to company standards.
- Support implementation of operational improvements that increase efficiency and service levels.
- Partner with store leadership to achieve departmental and store objectives.
- Maintain strong communication with associates and leadership teams.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and workplace safety standards.
- Promote safe work practices and proper equipment usage.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
- Ensure associates are trained on department procedures and safety expectations.
- Address operational and safety concerns promptly.
- Assist in managing labor expenses and department operating costs.
- Monitor department performance metrics, including sales, shrink, productivity, and profitability.
- Support action plans designed to improve financial results.
- Help achieve departmental sales and operational goals.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce expenses.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous grocery, retail, or related experience preferred.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Knowledge of grocery merchandising, inventory management, and customer service practices.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Basic computer, scheduling, and reporting skills.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of merchandise up to company standards.
- Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and repetitive hand movements.
- Ability to work in various store environments, including refrigerated and freezer areas.
- Ability to safely operate pallet jacks, carts, balers, ladders, and other department equipment.
