Position Overview
Reporting to the Senior Manager: Recruitment and Talent Management, the Assistant Manager is accountable for day-to-day recruitment delivery and team performance across South Africa. The South African recruitment team reports to this role, which directly leads volume and early-career hiring and oversees corporate, specialist and leadership recruitment through the relevant portfolio lead. As the Senior Manager’s operational deputy for South Africa, the Assistant Manager coordinates priorities, supports recruiters and resolves routine delivery issues within agreed plans and delegated authority. This is an internal-facing leadership role based onsite in Sandton, with structured coaching and a supported transition into management. The Senior Manager retains responsibility for global strategy, international portfolios, budgets and departmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Core Functional Responsibilities
- Own the South African recruitment delivery plan, translating approved requisitions and workforce requirements into recruiter assignments, hiring milestones and realistic timelines across both portfolios.
- Lead volume and early-career hiring from sourcing and screening through assessments, interviews, offers and intake readiness, ensuring clear ownership of checks and handover to HR and Training.
- Track pipeline numbers, stage conversion and candidate drop-off against required start dates; address sourcing gaps, delays and offer declines, and maintain suitable talent pools for recurring demand.
- Oversee corporate and leadership recruitment through the portfolio lead, reviewing priorities, candidate quality and difficult searches while supporting the lead’s ownership of daily execution and stakeholder engagement.
- Ensure consistent structured interviews and evidence-based hiring recommendations, with assessment results applied within the team’s training and authorised scope; support urgent or complex vacancies where capacity allows.
Team Leadership and Operational Management
- Set clear team and individual expectations, hold regular one-to-one discussions, review performance and provide practical coaching on recruitment delivery and candidate assessment.
- Coordinate workload, leave cover and new recruiter onboarding; address routine performance concerns and involve the Senior Manager and HR in formal performance, disciplinary or sensitive people matters.
- Provide a concise weekly South African portfolio review covering hiring delivery, pipeline health, agreed service levels, team performance and recovery actions; escalate material risks promptly with proposed solutions.
General and Cross Functional
- Act as the first operational contact for South African recruitment, coordinating with Operations, Workforce Management, HR, Training and hiring managers on approved requirements, interviews and start dates.
- Maintain accurate, current records in Quest, BambooHR and recruitment trackers; protect candidate confidentiality and ensure reliable communication, documented selection decisions and completed pre-employment checks.
- Apply recruitment policies and required approvals consistently. Refer changes to headcount, pay, budgets or selection requirements, and exceptions to policy or checks, through the appropriate approval route.
- Help the team use recruitment tools effectively, raise system issues and recommend practical improvements; review early-tenure feedback and 0–90 day attrition with Operations, HR and Training to agree shared actions.
Qualifications
Essential
- A relevant qualification in Human Resources, Psychology, Business Administration or a related field, or equivalent practical recruitment experience.
- At least five years’ recruitment experience, with a strong record of independently managing vacancies and stakeholder relationships.
- Understanding of end-to-end recruitment and exposure to volume hiring, or demonstrated ability to build this capability.
- Strong interviewing, candidate assessment, planning and problem-solving skills, with confidence using recruitment systems and performance data.
- Evidence of supporting colleagues, coordinating delivery or mentoring recruiters, with the readiness to lead a team and receive management coaching.
Preferred
- Experience within a BPO, contact centre or another environment with high recruitment volumes.
- Experience within Quantanite
- Exposure to corporate or leadership hiring and the use of assessment or psychometric insights in selection.
- Prior formal line management experience and exposure to AI-enabled recruitment tools or automated workflows.
