Assistant Manager (Senior Librarian)

Arlington County’s Public Library is seeking an Assistant Manager (Senior Librarian) to assist the Librarian Supervisor with the daily operations of the Central Operations unit and to manage and coordinate the work of Library Associates.

Specific duties include:

  • Planning, organizing, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of employees and volunteers in services provided, enforcing standards, serving on selection panels, providing training, and evaluating performance;
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of goals for the unit and programs annually;
  • Providing service and assistance to library patrons as well as planning, preparing, and conducting programs in area of specialty;
  • Assigning tasks to subordinates and helping them resolve non-routine facility and library patron issues;
  • Developing and delivering programs and promoting library outreach services for special populations of library patrons; and
  • Monitoring and inspecting library materials and equipment for replacement, repair and/or arrangement.
  • Experience as a hands-on manager, problem solver and strategic thinker;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, understand and focus on County-wide and Library system-wide priorities, work successfully within a team, and communicate effectively; and
  • An awareness of current trends in public libraries, be proficient in technology, be forward thinking, and a proven innovator.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Experience as a hands-on manager, problem solver and strategic thinker;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, understand and focus on County-wide and Library system-wide priorities, work successfully within a team, and communicate effectively; and
  • An awareness of current trends in public libraries, be proficient in technology, be forward thinking, and a proven innovator.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university; and
  • Significant experience providing library services with at least one year of experience as a professional librarian in a relevant subject/service specialty.

Certification: Must possess or be eligible for Virginia Librarian's Certification.


Desirables: Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Management/supervisory experience in a public library servicing a culturally diverse customer population;
  • Developing programs and outreach services in a library setting; and/or
  • Working cross-departmentally to collaborate on a major initiative, project, or service.

Additional Information

Work location and hours of work: Full-time, 40 hours per week including regular evening and weekend work. Actual work schedule is determined by the needs of the work location; assignment location could change over time. The current vacancy is at the Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy St., Arlington, VA 22201.
