Assistant Medical Underwriting Manager
General Overview:
We are excited to be partnering with a leading insurance organization to recruit a Medical Underwriter to join their high-performing team. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced underwriting professional to step into a role that offers strong ownership, visibility, and impact, contributing directly to portfolio strategy, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
Working closely with senior stakeholders, this role goes beyond day-to-day underwriting and offers the opportunity to influence decision-making, strengthen underwriting governance, and support the expansion of Group, SME, and Individual business lines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead underwriting activities across Group, SME, and Individual medical insurance portfolios
- Assess complex medical risks, determining appropriate pricing, terms, and coverage structures
- Analyze claims experience, utilization trends, and risk profiles to drive informed underwriting decisions
- Support portfolio growth while maintaining strong underwriting discipline and loss ratio control
- Partner with business development teams and brokers to structure competitive and sustainable solutions
- Manage renewals strategically, identifying risks and opportunities to enhance retention and profitability
- Monitor portfolio performance and proactively identify areas for improvement
- Contribute to underwriting governance, ensuring alignment with internal policies and regulatory standards
- Support portfolio reviews, reporting, and strategic planning initiatives
Key Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, Insurance, Risk Management, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in medical underwriting
- Strong exposure to Group, SME, and Individual medical insurance portfolios
- Professional qualifications such as CII / Dip CII are preferred
- Strong technical expertise in risk assessment, pricing, and underwriting decision-making
- Good understanding of market practices and regulatory frameworks within the medical insurance space
- Proven ability to balance commercial growth with disciplined underwriting practices
- Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment
