Assistant Produce Manager
The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in directing all aspects of Produce Department operations. This position helps ensure high-quality, fresh products are available for customers while maintaining merchandising standards, inventory accuracy, food safety compliance, and exceptional customer service. The Assistant Produce Manager assists with leading department associates, controlling shrink, driving sales, and achieving department profitability goals.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations- Assist with managing daily Produce Department operations.
- Ensure product displays are attractive, fully stocked, and aligned with company merchandising standards.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, rotation, and code dating.
- Assist with ordering, inventory control, receiving, and stock replenishment activities.
- Maintain accurate pricing, signage, and promotional displays.
- Ensure department cleanliness, organization, and customer readiness at all times.
- Deliver outstanding customer service and promote a positive shopping experience.
- Assist customers with product selection, availability, and produce-related questions.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Build customer loyalty through quality products and excellent service.
- Assist with training, coaching, and developing Produce associates.
- Assign and monitor daily work responsibilities.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and productivity.
- Support performance management and associate development efforts.
- Assume department leadership responsibilities in the Produce Manager’s absence.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering to minimize out-of-stock conditions.
- Help control shrink through proper ordering, handling, rotation, and merchandising practices.
- Execute seasonal, promotional, and special merchandising programs.
- Ensure displays maximize product visibility and sales opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.
- Monitor proper handling, storage, and temperature control procedures.
- Maintain safe working conditions and compliance with company safety policies.
- Ensure department equipment is clean and functioning properly.
- Support department sales, profit, labor, and productivity goals.
- Help manage inventory investment and shrink performance.
- Assist with inventory counts and operational reporting.
- Support initiatives designed to improve sales and operational efficiency.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous produce, grocery, retail, or food industry experience required.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Knowledge of produce merchandising, inventory management, and product handling practices preferred.
- Ability to prioritize work and adapt to changing business needs.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to work in refrigerated coolers and varying temperature environments.
- Ability to push, pull, and maneuver carts, pallets, and merchandise.
