Position Overview
The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing all aspects of the Produce Department, ensuring fresh, high-quality products, strong merchandising, and excellent customer service. This role helps drive sales, maintain food safety standards, and leads team execution within a fast-paced, perishable environment.
- Assist in managing daily produce operations including ordering, receiving, and inventory control
- Maintain fresh, full, and visually appealing displays throughout the department
- Ensure proper rotation (FIFO) and code date checks to maintain product freshness
- Monitor shrink and take proactive steps to reduce waste and loss
- Execute ad plans, seasonal features, and promotional displays
- Maintain clean, abundant, and attractive produce tables and wet racks
- Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and product labeling
- Adjust orders and displays based on sales trends and customer demand
- Ensure all produce meets company quality standards for freshness and appearance
- Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines
- Maintain proper handling, storage, and temperature control for perishable items
- Ensure department is audit-ready at all times
- Provide friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging service to customers
- Assist with product selection, ripeness guidance, and special requests
- Resolve customer concerns quickly and professionally
- Promote fresh items, seasonal offerings, and value-added products
- Assist in supervising, training, and coaching produce associates
- Delegate daily tasks and ensure completion of department workload
- Support hiring, onboarding, and performance development
- Step in to lead department operations in absence of the Produce Manager
- Previous produce or grocery experience preferred
- Knowledge of fresh produce handling and merchandising practices
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment
- Leadership and communication skills
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs
- Exposure to refrigerated areas and wet conditions
- Flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
