Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Description
Consula is recruiting on behalf of a well-established Shropshire employer for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor. Our client is a respected regional contractor with an impressive track record of delivering commercial, educational, and residential schemes across the Midlands and the Welsh Marches. Built upon technical excellence, integrity, and strong supply chain partnerships, the business has secured an extensive pipeline of new projects and is looking to expand its commercial team.
Within our client's business, commercial management is viewed as the financial heartbeat of every project rather than a back-office administration duty. As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will be embedded across the complete build lifecycle, protecting profitability, providing contractual clarity, and supplying site delivery teams with the reliable cost data required for sound operational decisions. You will work alongside experienced commercial leaders who are dedicated to mentoring your professional development.
Operating from the heart of the county, this position offers a brilliant platform to advance your career while enjoying Shropshire as an outstanding place to work. Celebrated for its historic market towns, scenic countryside, and active communities, Shropshire provides an exceptional quality of life away from the congestion of major cities while remaining well-connected to the wider region.
Location: Shropshire
Salary: £34,000 – £38,000 per year
Employment: Permanent
The Role
Working alongside Senior Quantity Surveyors, you will play an active role across the entire commercial lifecycle of our client's construction projects from initial procurement to final account.
• Assisting with the procurement process, including drafting tender packages, analysing subcontractor quotations, and preparing order documentation.
• Conducting accurate quantity take-offs, drawing measurements, and material comparisons from architectural drawings and technical specifications.
• Preparing and submitting monthly interim valuations in accordance with client contract conditions.
• Managing subcontractor accounts, including assessing monthly payment applications, drafting payment notices, and certifying payments.
• Valuing variations, site instructions, and drafting early warning notifications or compensation events under standard construction contracts.
• Assisting with the production of accurate cost value reconciliations, monthly commercial reports, and cash flow projections.
• Monitoring material, plant, and labour costs on live sites to identify variances against allocated budget allowances.
• Liaising closely with site management teams, design consultants, and subcontractors to resolve commercial discrepancies swiftly.
• Supporting the commercial team in the settlement and formal agreement of subcontractor and client final accounts.
About You
• A degree, HNC, or HND in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related construction discipline.
• Practical commercial experience working for a main contractor or specialist subcontractor within the UK construction industry.
• Working familiarity with standard UK forms of construction contract, such as the JCT and NEC suites.
• Strong numerical capabilities with the confidence to interpret detailed drawings, specifications, and project programmes.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for financial modelling and reporting, alongside general commercial management software.
• Clear verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise professionally with subcontractors, clients, and internal teams.
• Excellent personal organisation and time-management skills, capable of prioritising multiple project deadlines simultaneously.
• A full and valid UK driving licence, with willingness to travel to project sites across Shropshire and the surrounding region.
A Typical Day
Your days will offer a balanced mixture of head office focus in Shropshire and hands-on site exposure. In the morning, you might travel out to an active site to walk the scheme alongside the site manager, assessing completed works against a subcontractor payment application and noting any site variations. Returning to the office in the afternoon, you could spend your time updating contract registers, analysing quotations for an upcoming tender package, and preparing valuation paperwork to be reviewed by the Senior Quantity Surveyor ahead of month-end reporting.
What You Can Expect
• A secure, permanent role within an established, well-regarded regional construction business.
• Structured career progression and mentorship from chartered professionals to support your journey towards full Quantity Surveyor status.
• 28 days annual leave including bank holidays.
• Enrolment into the client's workplace pension scheme.
• Modern, collaborative office environment situated in Shropshire.
• Mileage reimbursement for business travel to regional sites.
• Continuous training opportunities, including support for professional qualifications and industry memberships.
