As Assistant Manager of our Garage Sale Hospice Shop, you'll play a key role in supporting the Shop Manager with the day-to-day running of this busy and unique retail environment. You'll also take the lead every Saturday, confidently managing the shop while the Manager enjoys a well-earned day off.

Your role will give you a strong sense of purpose as you help connect the community with the care hospice provides. You’ll contribute to raising a third of Harbour Hospice’s annual funding needs and forge very special relationships with a great team of volunteers.

Mo te tunga | About the role

This is a hands-on role where no two days are the same. You'll be on your feet, working alongside a dedicated volunteer team to sort, price and display a constantly changing range of donated goods, mainly large furniture items. It's fast-paced, physically active, and incredibly rewarding.

Most importantly, you'll help create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for our donors, customers and volunteers, ensuring everyone feels valued and appreciated.

While the role is busy and can be physically demanding, you won't be doing it alone. You'll have the support of an experienced Manager and an amazing team of volunteers who are passionate about making a difference in the community.

Key responsibilities:

• Support, motivate and inspire volunteers, building positive relationships with people from all walks of life.
• Lifting and shifting furniture. Load and unload the delivery truck. All to maximise sales and maintain an attractive shop environment
• Create an engaging shopping experience that drives sales and keeps customers coming back.
• Price, rotate and merchandise stock
• Uphold shop procedures and maintain high standards of health and safety.
• Contribute creative ideas to promote the shop, increase sales and engage with the local community.

This is a permanent role working Tuesday to Friday 8am to 4pm, and every Saturday 8:30am to 3pm.

You're a people person who genuinely enjoys delivering great customer service and creating positive experiences for everyone who visits the shop. You thrive in a busy, hands-on environment, are practical and organised, and have the ability to juggle competing priorities. You'll bring energy, initiative and a positive attitude, along with a willingness to pitch in wherever needed. Most importantly, you'll be passionate about supporting a shop that makes a real difference in the community.

To be successful in this role, you'll:

• Bring solid retail or customer service experience ideally at team leadership or management level.
• Be physically fit and able to lift heavy items and be on your feet throughout the day.
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to health and safety.
• Build positive relationships with customers, donors, volunteers and colleagues.
• Have an eye for value, with the ability to recognise quality brands and sought-after items.
• Be proactive, reliable and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

You'll also be flexible and willing to adjust your hours from time to time to help cover leave and provide additional support when needed.
