Position Purpose

The Assistant Store Director supports the Store Director in leading all aspects of store operations to ensure exceptional customer service, sales growth, profitability, operational excellence, and employee development. This position assists in directing daily store activities, executing company initiatives, developing department leaders, and maintaining a safe, efficient, and customer-focused environment. The Assistant Store Director serves as a key member of the store leadership team and assumes responsibility for store operations in the absence of the Store Director.

Key Responsibilities Store Operations
  • Assist in overseeing daily store operations to ensure company standards are achieved.
  • Support the execution of company programs, strategic initiatives, and operational goals.
  • Monitor store conditions, merchandising standards, and customer service performance.
  • Ensure departments maintain adequate staffing, inventory levels, and operational readiness.
  • Act as Manager-on-Duty and assume leadership responsibilities as assigned.
  • Lead and coordinate store operations in the absence of the Store Director.
Customer Service
  • Promote a customer-first culture throughout the store.
  • Ensure customers receive exceptional service and a positive shopping experience.
  • Resolve customer concerns promptly, professionally, and effectively.
  • Monitor service standards and implement improvements when necessary.
  • Foster an environment that encourages customer loyalty and repeat business.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, coach, and develop department managers, supervisors, and store associates.
  • Provide ongoing performance feedback, coaching, and accountability.
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and retaining talented employees.
  • Support succession planning and development of future leaders.
  • Promote employee engagement, teamwork, and a positive workplace culture.
  • Ensure leaders effectively train and develop their teams.
Sales & Merchandising
  • Support store-wide sales initiatives and growth strategies.
  • Ensure merchandising standards, promotional displays, and seasonal programs are executed successfully.
  • Monitor sales performance and identify opportunities to improve results.
  • Partner with department leaders to maximize sales and profitability.
  • Ensure pricing, signing, and product presentation standards are consistently maintained.
Financial Accountability
  • Assist in managing store profitability through effective expense and labor management.
  • Monitor sales, labor, shrink, and operating expenses.
  • Analyze store performance metrics and implement action plans for improvement.
  • Support achievement of financial goals and budget expectations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, and profitability.
Operational Excellence
  • Ensure compliance with company operational procedures and standards.
  • Monitor productivity and workflow throughout the store.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to improve operational performance.
  • Support inventory management, shrink reduction, and loss prevention efforts.
  • Ensure store facilities and equipment are properly maintained.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, workplace safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and employees.
  • Promote safety awareness and safe work practices throughout the store.
  • Ensure accident prevention, reporting, and corrective action procedures are followed.
  • Support emergency preparedness and store security programs.
Community & Store Leadership
  • Represent the store and company professionally within the community.
  • Support local events, community engagement initiatives, and company programs.
  • Foster strong working relationships with associates, customers, and business partners.
  • Promote company values and organizational objectives.
  • Serve as a role model for professionalism, integrity, and leadership.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Previous retail management experience required.
  • Grocery retail leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of store operations, merchandising, customer service, and financial management.
  • Proven leadership, coaching, and team development skills.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with scheduling, reporting, and operational systems.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of merchandise up to company standards.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Ability to work in various store environments, including refrigerated and freezer areas.
  • Ability to safely operate store equipment and assist departments when necessary.
  • Availability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
