Assistant Teaching Professor
Description
Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community.
Description
Oxford College, Emory University’s residential liberal arts college, invites applications for two full-time Assistant Teaching Professor positions in Biology to begin August 1, 2027. We seek broadly trained biologists with a strong commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching. We especially value candidates who enthusiastically approach introductory biology as an intellectually important part of their teaching. The successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to help first- and second-year students develop foundational biological knowledge, scientific reasoning skills, and confidence in engaging with scientific evidence.
Qualified candidates will be prepared to teach both lecture and laboratory sections in Oxford’s two-semester introductory biology sequence (topics in this sequence move from foundational topics in biology such as cell structures and cellular respiration to higher level concepts such as molecular processes, genetics, gene expression, and evolution). Additional teaching responsibilities will include contributions to Oxford’s first-year Discovery Seminar program and may include elective courses in the candidate’s area of expertise that support student desire for research experience or other courses that support Oxford’s General Education Program. The standard teaching load is two lecture sections and two laboratory sections per semester, or the equivalent.
We welcome applicants from across the biological sciences. We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring their disciplinary expertise into the undergraduate curriculum and who are interested in facilitating opportunities for students to engage in authentic scientific inquiry. Such opportunities might include developing a course-based undergraduate research experience or supervising student research projects when appropriate and feasible. Candidates with expertise in plant science or whose interests lend themselves to field-based, greenhouse-based, or computational approaches are especially encouraged to apply.
These are teaching-track faculty positions. Teaching-track faculty are on long-term contracts and have full faculty governance rights and responsibilities, and a path to promotion from Assistant to the ranks of Associate and Full Teaching Professor. Excellence in teaching is the primary responsibility of the appointment. Individuals are also expected to participate in program administration, advising, and service duties. Independent research productivity and peer-reviewed publications are not required.
Required Qualifications
· MSc in biology or a related field completed by the start of the appointment.
· Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
· Breadth of biological knowledge sufficient to teach both courses in Oxford’s introductory biology sequence, including associated laboratory sections.
· Commitment to teaching and mentoring first- and second-year students from a variety of backgrounds
Evidence of commitment to teaching and mentoring may include prior teaching experience, participation in teaching or pedagogy certificate programs, professional development in evidence-based instruction, curriculum development, mentoring experience, or other relevant preparation.
Preferred Qualifications
We particularly welcome candidates who demonstrate one or more of the following:
· Ph.D in biology or a related field completed by the start of the appointment.
· Experience with evidence-based, student-centered, active, or inquiry-based teaching practices.
· Interest or experience in developing authentic research experiences for undergraduates, including course-based undergraduate research experiences.
· Expertise that supports field-based, ecological, or organismal approaches to biology
· Expertise that supports computational, bioinformatic, or quantitative approaches to biology
· Interest in making use of Oxford College resources such as the greenhouse, Organic Farm, or field settings.
· Experience teaching, mentoring, or advising first- and second-year undergraduate students.
Applicants need not have expertise in all of these areas.
Who We Are
One of Emory University’s four schools partnering in undergraduate education, Oxford College provides approximately 1,000 first- and second-year students an intensive liberal arts education for the first two years of their Emory bachelor’s degree. Located approximately 36 miles east of Atlanta on Emory’s original campus, Oxford combines the resources of a major research university with the close faculty-student interaction of a small residential liberal arts college.
Oxford College faculty are deeply engaged in undergraduate teaching and mentoring. Small classes and laboratory sections support active, collaborative, and inquiry-driven learning, and faculty have opportunities to develop innovative courses and experiential learning experiences for first- and second-year students.
Oxford offers campus resources that support experiential learning, including a climate-controlled greenhouse, the Oxford College Organic Farm, and over 100 acres of nearby, college-owned natural habitats. Oxford faculty also enjoy access to resources provided by Emory University, including Emory’s High-Performance Computing cluster for data-intensive work and access to many domain-specific software & licenses.
We seek colleagues who are eager to contribute to an academic community and to support the intellectual growth of students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. The biology program values a highly collaborative environment to advance teaching, research, and service, and we seek candidates who are enthusiastic about working in close cooperation to shape and achieve our shared goals.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit the following materials through Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/196907:
· Curriculum vitae
· Cover letter: a 1-2 page letter addressing the candidate’s qualifications for the position, commitment to teaching introductory biology, and interest in working with first- and second-year students in a liberal arts college setting

· Evidence of Teaching Effectiveness: One PDF, no more than 8 pages, of material that documents the teaching practices and outcomes outlined in the candidate’s teaching statement. These might include syllabi or proposed syllabi, teaching evaluations, evidence of participation in teaching workshops (or other professional development), or sample assignments and assessments.
· Unofficial graduate transcript(s)
Applicants may also briefly describe interests or experience related to undergraduate research, course-based research experiences, field-based teaching, or quantitative/data-intensive biology in the cover letter or teaching statement. Prior experience in these areas is not required.
