Assistant Technician
Location: Union County, NC
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime)
Pay Range: $18 - $24 per hour
Job Summary
The Assistant Technician supports a variety of fiber network installation and field service activities, including Circuit Activation (CA), blockage resolution, and drop bury work. This role assists with fiber preparation, placement, testing support, trenching, digging, restoration, and general field tasks required to support customer installations and network deployment.
Assistant Technicians may work across multiple work types depending on business needs and may move between Circuit Activation, Blockage, and Drop Bury assignments. Work schedules can vary based on project requirements and customer needs and are not always predictable. Flexibility is important to support timely service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Circuit Activation (CA)
- Assist with fiber activation and testing activities
- Support equipment setup and teardown at customer locations
- Route and secure fiber inside residential or commercial premises
- Assist with basic troubleshooting under direction of Team Lead
- Handle tools, materials, and equipment
- Support fiber splicing activities (training provided)
- Float fiber within existing infrastructure (training provided)
Blockage
- Assist with blockage identification and resolution
- Support trenching and digging to access underground infrastructure
- Assist with fiber placement and restoration work
- Operate hand tools and basic equipment
- Support fiber splicing activities (training provided)
- Support blowing or floating fiber (training provided)
Drop Bury
- Assist with hand trenching or machine trenching
- Support cable placement from home to curb
- Assist with burial and restoration of work areas
- Handle tools, materials, and equipment
- Support routing and securing fiber
General Responsibilities
- Follow direction of Team Lead and field supervisors
- Maintain safe worksite practices and follow safety guidelines
- Travel to job sites within the region as assigned
- Support team needs across multiple work types as workload requires
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition
Work Schedule & Flexibility
Due to the nature of field work and customer installation needs, schedules may vary and are not always predictable. Flexibility with work hours, including occasional early start times, extended days, or schedule adjustments, is important to support project completion and customer commitments.
The role involves hands-on field work and may require physically demanding labor at times, including digging, trenching, lifting equipment, carrying materials, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Compensation & Benefits
- Non-exempt position eligible for overtime pay
- 9 paid holidays per calendar year
- Up to 18 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) accrued annually based on hours worked
- PTO may be used at the employee’s discretion, subject to scheduling needs
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to perform physical outdoor work in varying weather conditions
- Ability to perform physically demanding work at times, including lifting, digging, carrying materials, and using tools
- Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort using tools
- Willingness to learn fiber placement, splicing, and testing skills
- Ability to follow direction and work as part of a team
- Valid driver’s license required
Preferred Experience
- Prior field service, telecommunications, utility, construction, or hands-on technical experience
- Familiarity with basic fiber tools (PON meter, VFL, hand tools, etc.)
