HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organizations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realize their ambitions.
We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Assistant Vice President - Business Risk and Resilience
Purpose of the role
To support the HSBC Asset Management Asia-Pacific business in maintaining a robust non-financial risk and control environment. The role will provide risk and control expertise, challenge and guidance across Financial Crime Compliance, Regulatory Compliance, Information Security, Conduct Risk, Third-Party Risk, transformation and other operational risk areas. It will use data, analytics and technology to strengthen control design, monitor risk, identify emerging issues and deliver sustainable remediation across country, regional and global priorities.
In this role, you will be:
- Drive the effective design of operational controls by working with the Asset Management business and Operations to review and challenge front-to-back processes and controls, ensuring that risk and control standards—including BRR Control Design Principles—are embedded in all new processes, systems and change initiatives.
- Monitor and analyse control measures to form informed opinions on the control environment, ensuring an appropriate and efficient balance of Risk and Control Assessments, Key Risk Indicators, testing approaches, reviews, audits and judgement-based attestations.
- Analyse incidents and errors, perform risk-assessment deep dives triggered by internal or external events, and identify, escalate and address systemic control weaknesses and emerging risks across the control environment.
- Develop indicators and use data, analytics, technology and alternative methodologies to predict the potential impact of known risk triggers, measure control effectiveness and identify emerging risks. Apply lessons from control failures across processes, locations and other operational areas to help Asset Management Operations address similar weaknesses.
- Build effective relationships with key stakeholders across the Asset Management business, functions, second-line Risk and Operational Risk teams. Provide constructive and insightful challenge, ensure BRR advice is acted upon, support the deployment of the Non-Financial Risk Management Framework and operational risk policies, and contribute to positive stakeholder and leadership outcomes.
- Partner with stakeholders from the initial design stage of process, operating-model and system changes to ensure that control requirements are incorporated. Support robust, complete and sustainable remediation, ensure issues and actions are raised and managed promptly, and provide evidence of proactive risk and control interventions.
- Strengthen the Asset Management control environment and risk culture by ensuring that Control Owners understand and fulfil their responsibilities, comply with risk policies and control standards, and execute their duties consistently. Work with all lines of defence to influence the development and application of Group policies, control standards and procedures, ensuring the control framework effectively enforces policy requirements and supports best practice, standard tools and continuous improvements to the Risk Management Framework.
- Continually assess risks affecting the relevant Business Service, considering economic and market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures, organisational change and new technology. Promote HSBC’s conduct approach by supporting fair customer outcomes and the orderly and transparent operation of financial markets; maintain awareness of operational risk, including its identification, assessment, mitigation, control, loss identification and reporting.
To be successful you will be:
- Hold a postgraduate or equivalent professional qualification in Business, Accounting, Risk or a related discipline, such as an MBA, Chartered Accountancy or FRM; equivalent qualifications in Economics, Statistics or Law will also be considered. A degree-level qualification or equivalent is required.
- Have at least seven years’ relevant experience, including experience working effectively in a complex, global organisation and operating within a globally dispersed team across different cultures and time zones.
- Have detailed knowledge of Asset Management Operations, Asset Management products and services, financial markets and the regulatory environment in which the business operates.
- Have a sound understanding of risk and control frameworks, risk policies and best practice in risk management, with practical experience managing operational risk.
- Have experience designing and implementing process controls, together with process design and/or process re-engineering skills.
- Have expertise in risk and control reporting, particularly in defining, measuring and interpreting leading risk indicators, and be able to analyse complex and varied information to generate insight and develop concise, actionable conclusions and recommendations.
- Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication, report-writing and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex issues simply and concisely. Strong relationship management, collaboration and influencing skills are required, including experience engaging positively and providing constructive challenge to senior management.
