Summary
Entry-level field engineer at an AgriTech startup: travels to pig barns across the Midwest to deploy, configure, calibrate, and maintain AI pig-weighing camera systems and servers under a senior engineer's direction, documents site visits, and relays field data to product and engineering teams in Tokyo. Bilingual English/Japanese is a strong plus.
About Eco-Pork America
Eco-Pork America Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of Eco-Pork Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), an AgriTech company building computer vision and SaaS solutions for the swine industry. Our products include an AI-based pig weight estimation camera system and a cloud production management platform. We are an early-stage team moving from pilot deployments into commercial operations.
Role Summary
The Associate Field Solutions Engineer is the entry point into Eco-Pork America's Field Solutions track. You will be part of the small team that gets our AI camera systems working reliably in real pig barns across the Midwest — going to sites, executing the steps of a deployment under the direction of a Field Solutions Engineer, documenting what happens, and collecting the data our product and AI teams need.
Farm environments are not laboratories. Dust, temperature swings, imperfect power and network, animals, and people working around your equipment are the normal conditions. This role is designed for someone with a technical foundation who wants to build real field engineering capability by doing the work, not by reading about it.
This position works as a support function to the Field Solutions Engineer, and one of its core duties is to be the working link between the field in the Midwest and our product and engineering teams in Tokyo. A substantial part of that technical discussion and documentation is conducted in Japanese, so working in both languages is a real advantage in this position.
This is a development role with a clear path to Field Solutions Engineer.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow each site's biosecurity protocol, plan your visits and downtime around it, and carry the equipment and PPE(personal protective equipment) it requires.
- Execute assigned deployment steps on site: equipment and server setup in the cabinet, configuration, and calibration, under the direction of a Field Solutions Engineer.
- Perform routine system checks and first-line maintenance; troubleshoot within your scope and escalate clearly, with the information the next person needs.
- Document deployments and site visits — installation records, checklists, and post-visit reports — so that the knowledge is transferable rather than held in one person's head.
- Observe what is happening at the site and report it in structured form, including issues and improvement opportunities you notice before anyone asks.
- Collect the data our product, AI, and engineering teams need, to the specification they need it in.
- Support deployment logistics: equipment tracking, site readiness, and scheduling coordination with the Field Solutions Engineer and Field Operations.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, agricultural systems, animal science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Full professional proficiency in English — able to lead conversations with farm operators and contractors on site, explain technical issues in plain language to non-technical audiences, and write clear reports and documentation without assistance
- Hands-on aptitude with hardware, networked equipment, or systems — through coursework, internships, personal projects, or work experience
- Comfort working hands-on in livestock production environments, including regular presence in active barns
- Valid U.S. driver's license, or the ability to obtain one before your start date, and willingness to drive regularly to customer sites
- Based in or willing to relocate to the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area; residence in Iowa or Minnesota may be considered where the site travel pattern allows
Preferred Qualifications
- Strongly preferred: Japanese in addition to English — able to hold technical discussions in Japanese with our engineering team in Tokyo, and to read and write technical documentation in Japanese (business-level Japanese)
- Internship or project experience involving IoT devices, sensors, cameras, embedded hardware, or field service
- Familiarity with networking fundamentals (Wi-Fi, IP cameras, connectivity troubleshooting), Linux, or basic scripting
- Background or coursework in agriculture, livestock, or animal science
- Experience producing documentation, procedures, or SOPs(standard operating procedures) that others worked from, in any context
- Spanish language ability, which is widely spoken on farm crews in the region
What We Look For
- Brings structure to ambiguous situations rather than waiting for detailed instructions
- Finishes what you start, and leaves behind something the next person can pick up
- Communicates clearly under pressure — with farm operators on site and with engineers on the other side of the world
- Interested in why a system failed, not only in getting it running again
Working Conditions
- Driving to customer sites is an essential function of this position.
- This position requires satisfactory results from a background check and motor vehicle record (MVR) review, conducted following a conditional offer of employment.
- Work is performed in barns, production facilities, and processing plants, including exposure to variable temperatures, noise, odor, and dust.
- Requires adherence to customer biosecurity protocols, including downtime and shower-in/shower-out procedures at some sites.
- Work involves physical tasks associated with equipment installation and maintenance, including climbing ladders and entering ceiling or attic spaces to install and check cameras and wiring at roughly 7–10 feet (2–3 m), and handling equipment.
- Frequent overnight travel to farm sites across the Midwest.
- Small, distributed team, working in a bilingual (English/Japanese) environment with daily collaboration with our engineering team in Tokyo.
Growth Path
This is the entry level of the Field Solutions track, with a path to Field Solutions Engineer — the engineer who leads a site from survey through stable operation. What that step looks like in practice: leading site work without a more senior engineer present and the site staying stable; producing documentation that others use without asking you; and giving product and engineering input specific enough that they act on it. Progression depends on business need as well as readiness.
