Description

Job Summary The Department of Chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a tenured faculty position at the rank of associate or full professor, with a focus on experimental studies of materials under extreme conditions, including quantum materials. This strategic hire is intended to strengthen and expand materials research collaborations across UIC and with national laboratories, including Argonne National Laboratory (and the APS), Brookhaven National Laboratory (and NSLS-II), other U.S. Department of Energy laboratories, and partner universities through major interdisciplinary research centers and funded cooperative agreements. The anticipated start date is Fall 2027. Materials research faculty at UIC conduct both experimental and theoretical investigations spanning a broad range of topics, including quantum materials, energy materials, strongly correlated systems, advanced alloys, advanced manufactured materials, surfaces and low-dimensional systems, energetic materials, hard and superhard materials, nanomaterials, and biomaterials. UIC offers extensive computational, characterization, and synthesis capabilities through state-of-the-art core facilities, including advanced electron microscopies, materials synthesis laboratories, and high-performance computing resources. These strengths are complemented by access to world-class facilities at nearby national laboratories and partner institutions through longstanding collaborative relationships. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a nationally and internationally recognized research program in materials chemistry, broadly defined. Relevant expertise may include, but is not limited to, materials at high pressure, low or high temperature, and high magnetic fields; quantum and other functional materials; the use of advanced radiation facilities, such as synchrotron, free-electron laser, large laser platforms, or neutron-scattering sources; and advanced microscopies. The successful candidate will play a leadership role, or provide strong scientific leadership support, in advancing UIC's materials research enterprise and leveraging existing and emerging opportunities at national laboratories. The candidate will also have teaching duties consistent with their level of research activity, as per departmental and college policy. UIC is a Carnegie R1 public research university located in the heart of Chicago. Additional information about the Department of Chemistry and its research programs is available at chem.uic.edu. UIC is the largest university in the Chicago metropolitan area, serving more than 37,000 students across 15 colleges, including one of the nation's largest medical schools, and is recognized for having one of the most diverse student populations in the United States. Further information about the university and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences can be found at uic.edu and las.uic.edu. Duties and Responsibilities • Create a vibrant research program in materials chemistry that contributes to and expands UIC's national and international recognized research in this area. • Conduct state-of-the-art experimental investigations of materials, with a focus on materials in extreme conditions broadly defined. • Provide strong scientific leadership support in advancing UIC's materials research enterprise and leveraging existing and emerging opportunities at national laboratories. • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
