Associate Professor and Director - Preston Medical Library/ Health Information Center (UT Health Sciences COM-Knoxville)

The Director of the Preston Medical Library/ Health Information Center reports to the Dean of the University of Tennessee Health Sciences College of Medicine, Knoxville (UT Health Sciences COM-Knoxville). The Library Director has the primary responsibility for providing vision and leadership for planning, directing, and evaluating services and resources. The library has a dual function, serving as both an academic medical center library and a patient-centered information resource. As such, it serves with equal emphasis the staff, faculty, students, and healthcare providers at the University of Tennessee Medical Center as well as its patients, family members, and community. This is a full-time non-tenure Associate Professor.

• Provides professional expertise, administrative leadership, and overall direction for the library, including strategic and financial planning.

• Leads all operational areas of the library, including allocation of financial resources and personnel.

• Develops and implements annual budget according to University of Tennessee policies.

• Manages the collection and analysis of data on all aspects of services and resources.

• Develops and distributes monthly reports to the UT Health Sciences COM-Knoxville leadership.

• Reports to University Health System administration as requested.

• Ensures library services and resources support the educational, research, healthcare, and service mission of the UT Medical Center campus.

• Leads innovation in providing services and resources.

• Supervises ongoing assessments of products and services, analyzing data to make informed decisions.

• Provides direct supervision to faculty librarians and library personnel.

• Participates in research and scholarly activities.

• Serves as liaison to Administration faculty and directors.

• Attends university and hospital committees, councils, and meetings as the library representative.

• Represents the library locally, regionally, and nationally.

EDUCATION: Master's Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program is required.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum five (5) years of experience in a health sciences library is required. Demonstrated leadership experience in health science libraries and/or professional organizations.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATION: Medical Library Association (MLA), Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) credentialing required within six (6) months of service.

The University of Tennessee College of Medicine – Knoxville (UT Health Sciences COM-Knoxville) was initially established in 1956 as the UT Memorial Research Center and Hospital, which also provided the graduate medical and dental educational (GMDE) and research programs in Knoxville. The GMDE programs collectively became the UT Graduate School of Medicine with the formation of the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UT Medical) in 1991, and more recently were renamed the UT Health Sciences COM-Knoxville with the increased emphasis on undergraduate medical education in Knoxville as well as the statewide presence of UT Health Sciences.

The mission of the Knoxville Campus is to advance medical education required to train the next generation of physicians and dentists, deliver comprehensive and compassionate care with our hospital partner, UT Medical, and conduct innovative research that is meaningful for patients and their families. Our college provides training for third- and fourth-year Medical Students, second-year Physician Assistant Students, as well as Graduate Medical Education for 11 primary residency programs and 17 subspecialty fellowships. UT Health Sciences COM-Knoxville consists of 548 faculty (258 paid), 245 residents and fellows and hosts an average of 40-50 medical students per month. UT Health Sciences COM-Knoxville also provides Continuing Medical Education services for faculty, residents and practicing physicians in our region, as well as Advanced Medical Simulation for students, residents, and faculty.

The UT Health Sciences College of Medicine-Knoxville, in partnership with UT Medical, sponsors extensive translational research in both clinical and laboratory settings. The faculty collaborates with various institutions both regionally and nationally including other UT Health Sciences campuses, UTK, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and other health science center institutions.
