Associate Software Engineer – Comet

Job Summary

We are seeking an Associate Software Engineer to join the Comet team. In this role, you will contribute to developing and maintaining software solutions for equipment tracking operations, while improving system performance, automation, and operational efficiency.
You will work closely with Engineering and Product teams to build scalable applications, reduce technical debt, automate workflows, and support data-driven solutions.

The ideal candidate is passionate about software development, problem-solving, and learning modern engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, enhance, and maintain software applications supporting equipment tracking.

  • Analyze business requirements and translate them into scalable software solutions.

  • Identify and refactor legacy code to improve performance, maintainability, and reliability.

  • Standardize logging, error handling, and contribute to code cleanup and documentation.

  • Build internal tools and automate repetitive engineering and reporting tasks.

  • Support CI/CD pipeline improvements and DevOps practices.

  • Contribute to dashboards and reporting solutions for operational insights.

  • Explore AI/ML use cases such as predictive move management and move discrepancies detection.

  • Participate in code reviews, Agile ceremonies, testing, and bug resolution.

  • Ensure build quality, follow branching strategies, and contribute to timely product delivery.

We don't expect deep experience across all of the below — curiosity and a demonstrated ability to learn quickly matter more than checking every box.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • 0–2 years of software development experience, including internships or academic projects.

  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language such as C#, Java, Python, or JavaScript.

  • Working knowledge of SQL and Git, and a solid grasp of core software development principles.

  • Foundational understanding of microservice architecture and event-based communication — you should be able to explain what a service boundary is and why systems use message queues, even if you haven't built one in production.

  • Awareness of data pipeline concepts (batch vs. streaming, ETL basics).

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Participate in the team's 24/7 production support duty, including a scheduled on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, or automation tools.

  • Conceptual understanding of AI/ML fundamentals; any exposure to dashboarding tools (Power BI, Tableau, Grafana) is a plus.

  • Familiarity with REST APIs, Agile ways of working, and automated testing.

  • Comfortable using AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Copilot, Codex) as part of a daily development workflow.
