Associate Systems Engineer (Product Development)

The Associate Systems Engineer supports the R&D team in building, bringing up, and testing new hardware for remote power delivery systems. This is a bench and lab role rather than a field operations role: you will be building prototypes, setting up test rigs, running characterisation and verification tests, and feeding results back to the design engineers. The ideal candidate is hands-on, methodical about data, and comfortable working with electrical, mechanical, and firmware engineers on the same problem.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, wire, and bring up prototype hardware — harnesses, sub-assemblies, and full system integrations
  • Integrate mechanical, electrical, and firmware subsystems into working prototypes and support design iterations between revisions
  • Set up and operate lab equipment: oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, DAQ, thermal cameras, load cells
  • Design and build test jigs, fixtures, and rigs for repeatable bench testing
  • Run characterisation, endurance, and verification tests; record results and write up findings clearly enough for someone else to act on
  • Support environmental, EMC, and safety pre-compliance testing, both in-house and at external labs
  • Perform calibration of sensors and instrumented subsystems
  • Troubleshoot hardware and firmware issues down to board and component level, and document root cause
  • Maintain BOMs, wiring schedules, build records, and revision histories for prototype units
  • Assist with the development of build instructions, test procedures, and standard operating procedures for handover to production
  • Support field trials and customer demonstrations when required
  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline
  • 0 to 2+ years of hands-on experience building or testing electronic hardware
  • Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and datasheets
  • Competent with hand soldering, crimping, and harness assembly
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the discipline to isolate variables rather than guess
  • Comfortable recording and presenting test data
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and work in field environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with high-voltage DC systems and the safety practices that go with them
  • Familiarity with motor drives, BLDC control, or power electronics
  • Exposure to CAN bus, serial protocols, or embedded debugging tools (ST-Link, logic analysers)
  • Basic scripting for test automation and data processing (Python preferred)
  • Familiarity with ECAD or MCAD tools (Altium, KiCad, SolidWorks, Fusion 360)
  • Awareness of relevant standards such as IEC 62368-1, CISPR 32/EN 55032, or MIL-STD-810
  • Experience with unmanned systems or custom robotics builds
