Au Pair/Companion required for a 13-year-old neurodivergent male in Ballito, KZN.

Open 17d

Summary

Mentor and companion for a 13-year-old neurodivergent boy in Ballito, supporting after-school activities, homework, and social skill development through outdoor and hands-on experiences.

The young person in question is an active, enthusiastic teenager who enjoys spending time outdoors and being physically active. He loves sport, dog walking, horse riding and practical, hands-on activities such as making fires, woodwork and working with his hands. We are seeking a mature, energetic and engaging male mentor to support a 13-year-old neurodivergent boy after school. This is a unique role that combines elements of an au pair, mentor and companion, with a strong focus on building a positive, trusting relationship.

Main Purpose of the job:
The successful candidate will spend weekday afternoons with him, encouraging participation in meaningful activities, supporting homework where needed, accompanying him to activities, and fostering confidence, communication and life skills through shared experiences. Rather than formal teaching, the role involves mentoring through everyday interactions, conversation and relationship-building. He is highly social and genuinely wants to connect with others, but experiences differences in social communication that can make building and maintaining friendships difficult. He benefits from having a positive male role model who can naturally model appropriate social interactions, help him navigate social situations, and encourage his growing independence in a supportive and respectful way.

A suitable candidate would be someone who enjoys working with adolescents, has excellent interpersonal skills, is patient and encouraging, and is passionate about making a meaningful difference in a young person's life. Someone involved in youth leadership, coaching or community activities would be ideal.

Job Objectives:
∙ To collaborate with his family and multidisciplinary team to support his needs.
∙ Build a trusting and supportive mentoring relationship.
∙ Encourage independence and confidence in everyday situations
∙ Provide opportunities for positive social experiences and gently model appropriate social skills through everyday interactions.
∙ Provide companionship, encouragement and consistent guidance in a neuro-affirming manner.

Requirements

Job Requirements:
Male candidate (non-negotiable) English first language or equivalent fluency. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Energetic, active and happy to participate in sports and outdoor activities. Experience working with children or adolescents is essential. Experience supporting neurodivergent young people would be advantageous. Academically competent and able to provide support with schoolwork where needed. Patient, calm and able to provide consistent guidance whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries. Positive role model with good judgement and strong character. Excellent references demonstrating reliability and trustworthiness. Ability to commit to the role long term. Living in or near the Ballito area would be advantageous.
