Automation and AI Engineer

Summary

Hands-on Automation and AI Engineer at Westfund Health Insurance building and scaling production automation and AI solutions using Microsoft Azure, Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio), UiPath/RPA, generative AI, and REST API integrations in an APRA-regulated environment.

Salary: Highly attractive salary package

In a larger organisation, automation, Power Platform and generative AI would often sit across separate teams.

This role brings them together.

Westfund Health Insurance is seeking a hands-on Automation and AI Engineer to help scale how automation and AI are used across the organisation.

Westfund has already modernised much of its technology environment, established AI governance and delivered approximately 20 automation and AI components that collectively remove around 300 days of manual effort each year.

There is now a significant pipeline of further opportunities across the business.

About Westfund

Westfund is a member-focused private health insurer employing approximately 240 people and supporting communities across regional Australia.

Technology plays a practical role in its purpose of improving the health and lives of members, removing unnecessary administration and giving employees more time to focus on higher-value work.

Westfund is large enough to offer genuine technology and regulatory complexity, while remaining small enough for individual engineers to have visible impact.

Benefits include five weeks’ annual leave, leave loading, a wellbeing day, six months’ paid parental leave, Fitness Passport and investment in professional development.

The Opportunity

Westfund’s automation and AI capability is still developing, but the broader technology foundations are established.

The organisation has historically used an external partner for elements of its automation environment, including UiPath-based claims automation. It now wants greater internal ownership.

You will support what is already in production while working through a significant backlog of new opportunities.

The objective isn’t simply to build more bots. Where screen-based automation can be replaced by a more reliable API integration, Westfund wants to consider it. Where AI provides a better solution, there is scope to explore that too.

Your environment will include Microsoft Azure, Power Apps, Power Automate and Copilot Studio, alongside UiPath and RPA. You will also work across generative AI and prompt engineering, REST APIs and integrations, and AI agents and intelligent workflows.

You will work from proof of concept through to production, helping ensure solutions are secure, scalable and supportable within an APRA-regulated environment.

Where the Role Can Go

Initially, you will focus on high-volume processes where automation can quickly release capacity. From there, the work will progress into more sophisticated AI use cases.

As Westfund’s AI maturity develops, so will the role, with greater exposure to intelligent workflows, agents and AI-enabled decision support.

About You

You may currently be an Automation Engineer, Power Platform Engineer, RPA Developer, Software Engineer moving into AI or an AI Engineer looking for broader production experience.

Your strongest foundations are likely to sit across Microsoft cloud and Power Platform, automation or software engineering, supported by practical exposure to generative AI.

A software development background, potentially including .NET, would translate well.

UiPath experience is useful but not essential. Westfund has budgeted for training if the right person comes from another automation platform.

More important is curiosity. You will enjoy understanding how processes work, questioning whether there is a better approach and experimenting with new technology without losing sight of the business problem.

Why Join Westfund?

For someone currently specialising in one part of the automation or AI landscape, this role offers a chance to broaden into more end-to-end engineering.

You can build experience taking solutions from automation and APIs through to generative AI and production deployment, rather than becoming increasingly tied to a single platform.

You will also join early enough to have input into how Westfund’s internal capability develops and see the impact of what you build.

Westfund offers hybrid working, typically three days in the office and two from home, with candidates able to primarily work from Sydney CBD, Penrith or Lithgow.
