Autonomous Driving Software Engineer (Control Engineer)
Summary
Develops and tunes the control stack (steering, throttle, brake) of ADASTEC's SAE Level-4 autonomous bus, owning features from design through simulation, field testing, deployment and maintenance. Core tech: C++, ROS/ROS2, Linux, Python and control theory, with significant hands-on field work on real vehicles.
ADASTEC delivers SAE Level-4 Automated Driving Software Platform for commercial vehicles to enable OEMs to develop modern, automated, shared, and connected commercial vehicles. ADASTEC flowride.ai SAE Level-4 Automated Driving Software Platform integrated buses are on public roads in 14 countries in Europe & North America.
flowride.ai is designed with the fusion of different high-precision sensors available in the global market and complies with safety standards and regulations.
ADASTEC has an HQ and operation office in Michigan, USA, an EU Operations office in the Netherlands, Germany, and an R&D Office in Türkiye. For more information, visit www.adastec.com
We are hiring an Autonomous Driving Software Engineer who will work in our Planning and Control team, will own the control stack of our Level 4 autonomous bus and will develop and tune the controllers that turn planned trajectories into steering, throttle and brake commands.
The work covers the full cycle: design and implement new control algorithms, test them in simulation and on the vehicle, deploy them to the fleet and keep them running.
Our new teammate will spend a meaningful part of time in the field, debugging control behaviour on real buses together with test engineers. He/She will also build and maintain the tools the team uses to analyze controller performance: bag replay, calibration scripts, visualization and automated tests. Depending on project needs, he/she may also take part in integrating third-party systems into our stack.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, implement and tune control algorithms for the autonomous bus: lateral path tracking and longitudinal velocity control.
- Deliver assigned control features end to end: design, implementation in C++ and ROS/ROS2, testing in simulation and on the vehicle, deployment and maintenance.
- Take part in field tests on the vehicle. Prepare test plans, run the tests, collect data and report results.
- Debug control-related issues from field operations and test drives. Analyze recorded data, find the root cause, implement and verify the fix.
- Develop and maintain control-related tools: data replay and analysis, controller performance metrics, calibration scripts, visualization and automated tests.
- Support new vehicle platform bring-up and controller tuning.
- Take part in third-party system integration projects when assigned.
- Improve the robustness and safety of the control stack: fault handling, monitoring, parameter validation and documentation.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations and release documents for the control software.
- Work closely with the vehicle interface and OEM teams to resolve cross-team issues.
QUALIFICATIONS
- BSc or MSc in Control, Mechatronics, Computer or Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in vehicle control, robotics control or a similar real-time control application.
- Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
- Strong C++ skills (C++14 or newer) on Linux. Working knowledge of Python for analysis and tooling.
- Hands-on experience with ROS/ROS2.
- Solid control theory background.
- Experience with data-driven debugging: reading logs and recorded data, plotting signals, finding the root cause in a multi-node system.
- Willingness to work in the field on real vehicles, including test track and public road tests.
- Comfortable with Git-based workflows, code reviews and CI.
- Having no travel restriction.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of CAN bus communication: DBC files, CAN tools and signal-level debugging.
- Experience integrating third-party systems such as a drive-by-wire (DBW) system into an autonomous driving stack.
- Embedded or low-level experience: vehicle ECU software, embedded C, flashing and diagnostics.
- Experience with electric powertrains: torque and regen control, brake blending.
- Experience with model predictive control or longitudinal controllers for heavy vehicles.
- Experience with vehicle simulation and hardware-in-the-loop setups.
- Knowledge of functional safety concepts (ISO 26262, SOTIF) and safety-oriented software design.
- Experience with buses, trucks or other heavy commercial vehicles
